The tastier the bait put on the hook,
The more their foes for friends some poor fish took.

In Australia just one month ago the Superior General of the Society of St Pius X painted a glowing picture of his – as he hopes – imminent subjection of the Society to the officials of Conciliar Rome. From a long discourse here are a few significant remarks he made, summarised or quoted in full (in italics) :–

[...] Rome is offering us a new structure. At its head will be a bishop, chosen by the Pope from a list of three Society members, named by the Society. He will have authority over priests, over any religious wanting to join the new structure and over Catholics belonging to the new structure. These will have an absolute right to receive from Society priests all the sacraments, including marriage. This bishop will be able to set up schools and seminaries, to ordain (priests), to establish new religious Congregations. The structure will be like a super-diocese, independent of all local bishops. In other words, for you faithful, there will be no change from what you are already enjoying with the Society. The only difference will be that you will be officially recognized as Catholics.

You can easily imagine that there will be clashes with the local bishops. So we must be prudent, but as things stand you cannot imagine anything better than this offer, which is such that you cannot think it is a trap. It is not a trap, and if anyone makes us such an offer it can only be because he wishes us well. He wants Tradition to prosper and to flourish within the Church. It is impossible that such an offer could come from our enemies. They have many other ways to crush us, but not that way

The remarks highlighted here in heavy print call for comment –

* A “new structure” means presumably that Archbishop Lefebvre's structure for the Society will, essentially, be abandoned. Rome is creating a completely new entity. Good-bye, dear SSPX.

* A “bishop chosen by the Pope” is extremely important. And the head of the “new structure” will presumably go on being chosen by the Pope. Ask the Fraternity of St Peter what that means. It meant in the 1990's their own choice of Superior General being overridden by Rome, so that Rome's own choice was forcibly installed (Fr. Arnaud Devillers), to bring St Peter's to heel.

* Note also how this bishop will be able “to ordain (priests)” but not bishops. Rome will thus retain the whip-hand over the new entity.

* “There will be no change” ? But of course there will ! Rome will henceforth be in control.

* “You will be officially recognized” – but what Catholic needs any recognition by such destroyers of the Church as her present neo-modernist officials ? Any such recognition can only be a bad sign.

* “Not a trap...” ? This whole paragraph is truly remarkable. The author of these “Comments” feels obliged to turn to Mickey Mouse and to his beloved partner, Minnie Mouse, for comment :–

Mickey: Darling, can you smell that delicious cheese that I can smell ? Oh look, here it is !

Minnie : But Mickey, it's a mousetrap, set by the owner of the house to get rid of us. Can't you see that ?

Mickey: It cannot be a trap ! I tell you, if anyone offers us such good cheese, it can only be because he wishes us well. It's clear that he wants us mice to prosper and flourish inside his house.

Minnie: (imploringly) Oh darling, can't you remember how many of our cousins died this way ?

Mickey: For the last time, I tell you – and I am never wrong – it is impossible for such delicious cheese to come from our enemies ! They could never use that way to crush us.

Minnie: (with a deep sigh) There is no better way to crush us ! And how many more of our friends and relatives are going to follow Mickey's lead ? Oh, masculine pride !

Indeed. How many more mice is Bishop Fellay leading towards the dissolution of their Catholic faith ?                                    Kyrie eleison.

" )ローマ教皇庁が SSPX 署名用に草案を書いたのでしょうか?(ろーま きょうこう ちょうが せいぴお じゅっせい かい しょめい ように そうあんを かいた ので しょうか?)( "Drawn up by Rome for the SSPX to sign ?

),敢えて(敢て)望む信徒達の為に公会議以前の宗教を実践し続けました(あえて のぞむ しんと たちの ために こうかいぎ いぜんの しゅうきょうを じっせん しつづけ ました)( "… and to continue the practice of the pre-Conciliar religion for any souls wishing to take the trouble." ). (wanted now by more and more Traditionalists) ."

), SSPX の現指導者達はローマ正式教会の支配下に戻りたいと願って居ます(せいぴお じゅっせい かいの しどうしゃ たちは ろーま せいしき きょうかいの しはいかに もどりたいと ねがって います)( "… so the SSPX's present leaders want to put themselves back under Rome's official Church authority." ).

Readers, wait for it, take an advance hint –
When the agreement comes, read the fine print !

Rumours coming from the Society of St Pius X seem to confirm the speculation of these “Comments” last week (see EC 423 of Aug. 22) that Rome wants an agreement with the SSPX. The rumours tell of a secret meeting held at the beginning of this month where SSPX leaders discussed finances and a “doctrinal preamble”. Was it the same preamble mentioned by Cardinal Müller on August 3 ? Drawn up by Rome for the SSPX to sign ? The Cardinal said that that would be necessary for any agreement, while Bishop Schneider saw no doctrinal problem because Vatican II was merely “pastoral”. But let us recall why the Cardinal was the more realistic of the two.

The 16 official documents of the Second Vatican Council present together a new vision of God, life and man, a new religion in tune with the man-centred modern world, but clashing with the God-centred Catholic religion that had not changed essentially for over 1900 years. Both religions teach their vision of God, life and man, both are doctrinal, but the two doctrines clash. However, by skilful ambiguities – ambiguity is the hallmark of the 16 documents – the Council Fathers were persuaded that there was no clash, and so when they voted in favour of the documents, there were three reasons why Catholics worldwide went along with the new religion: its clash with the true Faith was skilfully disguised, it was imposed on Catholics by almost all Church authorities from the Popes downwards, and it was rather easier to practise than the pre-Conciliar religion.

But God raised one true shepherd, Archbishop Lefebvre, to insist on the doctrinal clash, to stand up to the unfaithful Church authorities, and to continue the practice of the pre-Conciliar religion for any souls wishing to take the trouble. And these were enough in number for the Archbishop's Society to have spread all over the world by the time he died in 1991. But his successors at the head of his Society were born after World War II into a very different world from that of the Archbishop, born before World War I. They did not see the world or doctrine as he saw them, so they had not the same motivation as he had to go on standing up to the Church authorities, even if they were not yet themselves wanting the Conciliar relaxation of Church discipline (wanted now by more and more Traditionalists). It was simply a matter of time before the magnetism of Rome would exert its pull.

As for the Romans, they were obdurate in their new Conciliar religion, and so from 2000 onwards they openly welcomed all approaches being made by the SSPX, because its doctrine and practice of unchanged Catholicism were a standing rebuke to their Freemasonic novelties, and a constant threat to them, like an unconquered pocket of the enemy in the rear of an otherwise all-successful invasion. Therefore as the Romans want to absorb the SSPX into their Newchurch, so the SSPX's present leaders want to put themselves back under Rome's official Church authority. It is a marriage made in Hell, and sweet Newchurchmen like Bishop Schneider can see no problem, because they have not seen, or have not wanted to see, the underlying clash of basic doctrine.

So Cardinal Müller is right in this respect. If two men have different visions of God, life and man, any agreement between them can only be relatively superficial. So if the SSPX cannot be brought to abandon dogma, or rather to undermine all Catholic dogma with the Masonic super-dogma that all dogma is mush, then the SSPX is bound to act within the walls of Rome like a Trojan horse. That is why the Cardinal will insist on a preamble, whether written by Rome or by the SSPX is of no importance, so long as the mass of Traditionalists, just like the mass of Catholics after Vatican II, will let themselves be deceived by the doctrinal ambiguities. Brilliant these will be.

( "No doctrine ? Then apostasy will win." )

( "Doctrine must be maintained, through thick or thin. " )

との関係につ(就)いて発言しましたが(きょうこう ちょうと せい ぴお じゅっせい かい〈いか,えす えす ぴー えくす と しるす.〉との かんけい について はつげん しました が),両者は互いに矛盾している様に見えます(りょうしゃは たがいに むじゅん している ように みえます)( "Two Roman churchmen have seemed to contradict one another in remarks made recently about relations between Rome and the Society of St Pius X, …" ). ),警察は犯人から自供を引き出すとき(時)(けいさつは はんにん から じきょうを ひきだす とき)( "… when the police want to get a confession out of a criminal, …" ),初めに手荒な警官を送り込み,犯人が惨めな状態になって,お情けを願い出る様になる(成る・為る)まで(迄)痛め付けます(はじめに てあらな けいかんを おくり こみ,はんにんが みじめな じょうたいに なって,おなさけを ねがいでる ように なる まで いため つけ ます)( "… firstly a brutal policeman is sent in to beat up the criminal until he is in a very sorry condition, requiring all kinds of sympathy." ).そこで,優しい警官が現れ,同情を降り注ぎ,犯人が口を割って自白する様仕向けます(そこで,やさしい けいかんが あらわれ,どうじょうを ふりそそぎ,はんにんが くちを わって じはく する よう しむけ ます)( "Then a really nice policeman is sent in, oozing with a sympathy which often makes the criminal open up and confess his crime." ).

今回の場合,「悪玉警官」は他ならぬ教皇庁教理省長官のミュラー枢機卿でしょう(こんかいの ばあい,「あくだま けいかん」は ほか ならぬ きょうこう ちょう きょうり しょう ちょうかんの みゅらー すうききょう でしょう)( "The “bad cop” in this case would be no less than the Prefect for the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith, Cardinal Müller, …" ).彼は8月初め,ドイツ司教会の公式ウェブサイト katholisch.de とのインタビューに応じ(かれは はちがつ はじめ,どいつ しきょう かいの こうしき うぇぶさいと katholisch.deとの いんたびゅーに おうじ)( "… who early this month in an interview with katholisch.de, official website of the German Bishops' Conference, …" かこ すうかげつの あいだ,そうご しんらいを つよめる もくてきで ことなる ろせんの すりあわせが おこなわれ ました」 と)( "… said about a Rome-SSPX agreement that “There is no substantial new development. The Holy Father wishes that we keep trying: “con tenacia e pazienza” – “with tenacity and patience.” The precondition for a full reconciliation is the signing of a doctrinal preamble in order to guarantee a full agreement in the essential questions of the Faith. In the past months, there were encounters of different ways which are meant to strengthen the mutual trust.” " ).

この なかで,かれは おおくの ことを のべて いますが,とくに せい ぴお じゅっせい かい ほうもんに ついて まえむきな こめんとを して います)( "Just recently he conducted an interview with a Hispanic website, Rorate Caeli en español, in which among other things he commented favourably on these visits." ). こうしき しょうにんが でる まで,かれらを げんじょう どおりの まま うけいれる べきだ」 と,のべて います)( "After his visits he could see “no weighty reasons to deny the clergy and faithful of the SSPX the official canonical recognition, and meanwhile they should be accepted as they are.” " ).

" )ミュラー枢機卿でしょうか,それともシュナイダー司教でしょうか?(みゅらー すうききょう でしょうか,それとも しゅないだー しきょう でしょうか?)( "Cardinal Müller or Bishop Schneider ?
No doctrine ? Then apostasy will win.
Doctrine must be maintained, through thick or thin.

Two Roman churchmen have seemed to contradict one another in remarks made recently about relations between Rome and the Society of St Pius X, but one explanation of the contradiction may be that Rome is playing on the Society a police trick as old as the hills. By the “good cop, bad cop” routine, when the police want to get a confession out of a criminal, firstly a brutal policeman is sent in to beat up the criminal until he is in a very sorry condition , requiring all kinds of sympathy. Then a really nice policeman is sent in, oozing with a sympathy which often makes the criminal open up and confess his crime.

The “bad cop” in this case would be no less than the Prefect for the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith, Cardinal Müller, who early this month in an interview with katholisch.de, official website of the German Bishops' Conference, said about a Rome-SSPX agreement that “There is no substantial new development. The Holy Father wishes that we keep trying: “con tenacia e pazienza” – “with tenacity and patience.” The precondition for a full reconciliation is the signing of a doctrinal preamble in order to guarantee a full agreement in the essential questions of the Faith. In the past months, there were encounters of different ways which are meant to strengthen the mutual trust.”

Here it is clearly stated that the SSPX will have to sign a doctrinal text agreeable to neo-modernist Rome if it wishes for an agreement with Rome. The Cardinal is also being a “bad cop” when he reveals that there were “encounters of different ways” between Romans and the SSPX “to strengthen mutual trust”. Or is the SSPX happy that Rome is shedding the light of day upon contacts otherwise unknown ? Yet who that has the Catholic faith is re-assured by mutual trust being established with neo-modernists ? But now comes the “good cop”.

Earlier this year Bishop Athanasius Schneider visited two seminaries of the SSPX “in order to conduct a discussion on a specific theological topic with a group of theologians of the SSPX and with His Excellency Bishop Fellay”. Just recently he conducted an interview with a Hispanic website, Rorate Caeli en español, in which among other things he commented favourably on these visits. He himself was treated with cordial respect, and he observed a respect all around for the reigning Pontiff, Pope Francis. After his visits he could see “no weighty reasons to deny the clergy and faithful of the SSPX the official canonical recognition, and meanwhile they should be accepted as they are.” Bishop Schneider confirmed that he saw no doctrinal problem in the way of an agreement by downplaying the importance of Vatican II: the Council was primarily pastoral, and of its time, he said.

So who represents the real Rome ? Cardinal Müller or Bishop Schneider ? Certainly both. If the “good cop, bad cop” routine is not conscious, it is certainly instinctive. Rome, by keeping its options open, can continue to play the SSPX like a fish, reeling it in, letting it out, raising hopes and then dashing them, bending the wire and straightening it again, and again, until finally it snaps. Alas, one may suspect that by “encounters” the leaders of the SSPX are complicit in this game of Rome.

"Drop down dew, ye heavens, from above, and let the clouds rain the just: let the earth be opened, and bud forth a saviour: and let justice spring up together: I the Lord have created him."

( "Towards Rome a great Archbishop did, yes, push." )

( "But what can be done when Romans' minds are mush ? " )

たしょう へんしゅうを くわえ ましたが,ないようを かんけつ かつ わかり やすく するため です):--( "Here follows a second and last series of extracts, slightly edited but only for the sake of brevity and clarity:-- " )

私は聖ピオ十世会( "SSPX" )が真の神( "God" )の望まれた真の信仰( "the Faith" ),真の教会の真実( "the truth of the Church" )を守り続ける為の手段だと深く確信しています(わたくしは せいぴお じゅっせい かいが まことの かみの のぞまれた まことの しんこう,まことの きょうかいの しんじつを まもり つづける ための しゅだん だと ふかく かくしん して います)( "I am deeply convinced that the Society is the means that God wanted to keep and maintain the Faith, the truth of the Church." ).

( "Q: What conclusions can we draw from the Society of St Pius X after 20 years of its existence ?

A: The Good Lord wanted Catholic Tradition. I am deeply convinced that the Society is the means that God wanted to keep and maintain the Faith, the truth of the Church. We must continue faithfully to keep the treasures of the Church, hoping that one day they may resume the place which they should never have lost in Rome." )

問い: 貴方は私達を近代ローマと対峙させるのは典礼( "the liturgy" )より,現在ではむしろ(寧ろ)真の信仰( "the Faith" )だとよく言われます.(あなたは わたくしたちを きんだい ろーまと たいじ させる のは てんれい より むしろ まことの しんこう だと よく いわれます)( "Q: You often say that, more than the liturgy, it is now the Faith which opposes us to modern Rome. " ).

だが,もっとも たいせつな ことは まことの しんこうの もんだい です)( "A: Certainly the question of the liturgy and the sacraments is very important, but the most important is the question of the Faith." ). " ).だが今では,彼等は伝えるべき伝統や信仰預託( "Deposit" )等何も無いと言い,その(其の)本性を現し始めています(だが いま では,かれらは つたえる べき でんとうや しんこう よたく など なにも ない といい,その ほんしょうを あらわし はじめて います)( "Now they are showing their true colours by saying there is no longer any Tradition or Deposit to be transmitted." ).

なぜなら,かこ から ひきつがれた もろもろの ほうそくが もはや なにも のこって いない からです.)( "There was no point in our talking, in our discussing with them. ).

( "Q:  You often say that, more than the liturgy, it is now the Faith which opposes us to modern Rome.

A:  Certainly the question of the liturgy and the sacraments is very important, but the most important is the question of the Faith. This is not a question for us. We have the Faith of all time, of the Council of Trent, of the Catechism of St. Pius X, of all the Councils and all the Popes before Vatican II. For years they have tried in Rome to show that everything in the Council was fully consistent with this Tradition. Now they are showing their true colours by saying there is no longer any Tradition or Deposit to be transmitted. Tradition in the Church is whatever the Pope is saying today. You must submit to what the Pope and the bishops say today. Here is their famous ‘Living Tradition’, which was the only basis for our condemnation in 1988.

Now they have given up trying to prove that what they say is consistent with what Pius IX wrote or with what the Council of Trent promulgated. No, all of that is over; it’s outdated, as Cardinal Ratzinger said. It is clear, and they might have said so earlier. There was no point in our talking, in our discussing with them. Now we suffer from the tyranny of authority, because there are no longer any rules from the past.

They are showing more and more that we are right.
We are dealing with people who have a different philosophy from ours, a different way of seeing, who are influenced by all modern subjectivist philosophers. For them there is no fixed truth, there is no dogma. Everything is evolving. This is really the Masonic destruction of the Faith. Fortunately, we have Tradition to lean on! " )

答え: 問題を理解し,私達が真の伝統と真の信仰の細道を真っ直ぐ断固として進み続ける様( "to continue along the straight and firm path of Tradition and the Faith" )正確に助けてくれる(呉れる)本物の信徒達は(もんだいを りかいし,わたくしたちが まことの でんとうと まことの しんこうの ほそみちを まっすぐ だんこ として すすみ つづける よう せいかくに たすけて くれる ほんものの しんと たちは)( "A:  Our true faithful, those who have understood the problem and who have precisely helped us to continue along the straight and firm path of Tradition and the Faith, …" ).だから「ローマと何としても合意しなければ」と言う人達に,私は今でも,ローマとの交渉中に私は必要以上の努力をしたと言えると思います(だから「ろーまと なんとしても ごうい しなければ」という ひとたちに,わたくしは いまでも,ろーまとの こうしょう ちゅうに わたくしは ひつよう いじょうの どりょくを したと いえると おもいます)( "So now too, to those who say to me, “You’ve got to reach an agreement with Rome,” I think I can say that I then went even further than I should have." ).

昨年の4月中旬(ちゅうじゅん),聖ピオ十世会( "the Society of St. Pius X" = SSPX )が発表した教理宣言(きょうりせんげん)( "the Doctrinal Declaration" )はローマ教皇庁によって受け入れ拒否(きょひ)されたのだからすでに興味(きょうみ)の薄(うす)れた問題だと論(ろん)じる人たちは( "Besides arguing that the Doctrinal Declaration of mid-April last year was refused by Rome and so is of no further interest, …" ),さらにSSPX の3人の司教が最近の6月27日に発表した宣言を理由に挙(あ)げ ( "… also resort to the three bishops’ recent Declaration of June 27, …" ),同会内部には何ら重要な変化が起きているわけでなないと主張しています( "… people claiming that there has been no significant change in the Society of St Pius X" ).この新(あら)たな宣言が, SSPX 救命ボートは無傷(むきず)で,まだ完璧(かんぺき)に航海(こうかい)に耐(た)えうる状態だと人々に保証(ほしょう)するために出(だ)されたのは明白(めいはく)です( "… which was obviously designed to reassure people that the SSPX lifeboat is undamaged and still perfectly seaworthy." ). ).

この宣言でとりわけ問題なのは11番目のパラグラフです( "It is the 11th paragraph which has become notorious." ).要約すると,ここで3人の司教は自分たちは,ローマ教皇庁(以下,「ローマ」と記〈しる〉す)がまもなく(カトリック)伝統に立ち戻る(たちもどる)か否(いな)か,あるいは公会議(こうかいぎ)の犯(おか)した誤(あやま)りに SSPX が公然(こうぜん)と異(い)を唱(いをとな)える権利(けんり)と義務(ぎむ)をローマがはっきり認(みと)めるか否かにかかわらず,今後(こんご)とも神の御導き(おんみちびき)( "Providence" )に従って行動するつもりだと述べています( "In brief, the bishops here state that they intend in the future to follow Providence, whether Rome soon returns to Tradition, or it recognizes explicitly the right and duty of the SSPX to oppose in public the Conciliar errors." ). なぜなら,神のご介入(かいにゅう)でもない限(かぎ)り,バチカンに固(かた)く根(ね)をおろす神の敵(てき)たちが公会議から手を引く(てをひく)ことなどないからです( "Now this “whether” clause is out of the question because nothing short of a divine intervention is going to make the enemies of God, firmly established within the Vatican, let go of their Council." ). ).司教たちは SSPX が公会議に異を唱える「権利と義務( “right and duty” )」をローマが「はっきり認める( “explicitly recognizing” )」と述(の)べていますが,それは具体的(ぐたいてき)に何を意味するのでしょうか?( "What can the bishops have meant by Rome “explicitly recognizing” the “right and duty” of the SSPX to oppose the Council ? " )

彼らが明(あき)らかに意味するものは,ローマが SSPX に対し主流派教会内での何らかの公式な立場を約束するか,あるいは何らかの形で教会法上(きょうかいほうじょう)の新(あら)たな規則(きそく)を定(さだ)める( "some form of canonical regularisation" )かということでしょう( "The obvious meaning is that Rome would grant to the SSPX some official status within the mainstream Church, or some form of canonical regularisation." ).ローマによるそうした承認は SSPX 指導者たちが10年以上前にパリのシンクタンク GREC の考え方を取り入れて以来(いらい)勝ち取(かちと)ろうと努(つと)めてきたものです( "Some such recognition is obviously what the SSPX leaders have been striving for ever since they adopted the ideas of the Parisian think-tank, GREC, well over ten years ago." ).しかし,それら指導者たちがローマが示した承認(しょうにん)の諸条件(しょじょうけん)を昨年4月にほぼ全面的に受け入れた時( "But when those leaders in April of last year largely accepted Rome’s terms for such a recognition, …" ),結果として SSPX 内で抗議(こうぎ)の嵐(あらし)が吹き荒(ふきあ)れるという事態を引き起こしてしまいました( "… they created such a storm of protest within the SSPX …" ).そのため,彼らは4月中旬の諸条件に基づくローマの承認は今後(こんご)求(もと)めないと装(よそお)わざるをえなくなりました( "… that they were forced to pretend that they no longer want any such recognition based on the mid-April terms." ). " )

3人の司教たちが宣言を出した数日後(すうじつご),SSPX のフランス管区(かんく)担当(たんとう)の管区長が同会指導者たちににまったく同じ疑問(疑問)を投(な)げかけました( "Within a few days the French District Superior put to them exactly that question." ).彼が得(え)た答えは,問題の「あるいは」条項の部分( "the “or” clause" )は必ずしもローマによる公式承認を必要とするということでなく( "He was told that the “or” clause does not necessarily entail any official recognition, …" ),むしろ単に,一方では弱体化(じゃくたいか)しながらもカトリック信徒である教皇が SSPX の「権利と義務」を認めるほど十分にカトリック的である云云(=云々,うんぬん)とか,しかしながら他方では教皇があまりにも弱体化し教皇庁内部で孤立化しているためローマ人たちに SSPX の公式承認を押し付(おしつ)けられないでいる云云(うんぬん)といったことから生(しょう)じた不測の事態(じたい)に言及(げんきゅう)したものものだということでした.( "… but merely the eventuality of a weak but Catholic Popebeing on one hand Catholic enough to recognize SSPX's “right and duty”, etc., but on the other hand too weak and isolated within Rome to be able to impose on the Romans any official recognition, etc.." )そしてフランス管区長はこの回答に少なくとも満足(まんぞく)したようで,それを直(ただ)ちに自分の管区内の司祭たちに伝(つた)えました( "And the District Superior at least appeared to be content with this answer when he immediately transmitted it to the priests of his District." ).

さて,この答えに私はびっくり仰天(ぎょうてん)しました!("Well, knock me over with a feather ! " ) まず最初に,6月27日の宣言を読んで,この答えが3人の司教たちが念頭に描いていたものと同じだと理解した者が果(は)たしているでしょうか?("Firstly, who, just reading the text of June 27, could ever have guessed that this was what the bishops had in mind ? " ) そして次に,3人の司教たちが「神の御導(おんみちび)きに従(したが)う」という名目(めいもく)で受け入れるつもりだった一連の他の可能性を6月27日の宣言テキストから排除(はいじょ)させたものは何なんでしょうか?("And secondly, what in the text of June 27 excludes a range of other possibilities that the bishops would accept in the name of “following Providence” ? " ) 2012年6月17日にフェレー司教( "Bishop Fellay" )が教皇ベネディクト16世に書簡(しょかん)を送り,ローマと SSPX との和解を求めるため全力を尽(つ)くすと伝えているわけですから( "Given that on June 17, 2012, Bishop Fellay wrote to Benedict XVI that he would continue to do all he could to pursue a reconciliation between Rome and the SSPX, …" ),抜け目(ぬけめ)のないローマ人たちがやがて司教たちに和解の提案をし,常(つね)に「神の御導き( “Providence” )」 の名の下(もと)に - SSPX の司教たちが拒めなかった文言(訳注・そういう建前で,という意味合い.「神の 御導き」という文言〈もんごん〉を使えば SSPX はどんな条件も拒めなくなる,という意味合い) - それを拒(こば)めないことを6月27日の宣言テキストから排除したのは何故(なぜ・なにゆえ)でしょう?( "… what in the text of June 27 excludes the cunning Romans eventually making to the bishops such an offer of reconciliation that – always in the name of “Providence” – they could not refuse ? " )

「あるいは」で始まる宣言条項部分についてフランス管区長に与えられた答えを受け入れる人たちには幸運を祈ります( "Good luck to anyone who accepts the interpretation of the “or” clause given to the French District Superior. " ).しかし, SSPX 指導部が和解不可能な者たちとの和解を成し遂(なしと)げるという気違(きちが)いじみた夢(ゆめ)を捨て去(すてさ)っていないと考える人たちは私たちの周囲(しゅうい)に多数います( "However, there are many of us who will remain unconvinced that the leadership of the SSPX has given up on its mad dream of reconciling irreconcilables. " ).そうでない証拠(しょうこ)がはっきりするまで,私たちは SSPX 指導者たちが,たとえ故意(こい)でないにせよ,SSPX の救命(きゅうめい)ボートを失命(しつめい)ボート( "a deathboat" )に変えるつもりでいると考えます( "Until clear proof to the contrary, we will assume that those leaders remain, however unwittingly, intent upon turning the SSPX lifeboat into a deathboat. " ).そして,私たちすべてが溺死(できし)するなら,SSPX 指導者たちはそれをすべて悪い海洋(かいよう)条件(じょうけん)のせいにすることでしょう( "And when everyone drowns, they will make it all the ocean’s fault ! " ).

「恐怖( "horror" )」という言葉は,少なくとも1年前から明確になった聖ピオ十世会( "the Society of St Pius X" = SSPX" )の方向転換を表すには強すぎるかもしれません( " “Horror” may seem too strong a word for the change of direction within the Society of St Pius X that at last became clear one year ago." ). その損なわれた教会の中に奇跡的に真の信仰の砦(とりで)が築かれましたが,その砦さえいまや壊されようとしています( "However, if Hell is horrible; if one cannot avoid it without the faith; if the faith came into grave danger in a Church disabled by Vatican II, but a fortress of the true faith was miraculously established within that disabled Church; …" ).もし,こうしたことが実態だとしたら,「恐怖」はけっして強すぎる言葉ではないでしょう( "… and finally if that fortress is now also being disabled, then “horror” may not be too strong a word. " ).

これからも転落が続くかもしれません( "The SSPX has not yet fallen completely, but it has fallen a long way and it may fall all the way." ).過去15年間その転落を推し進めてきた SSPX 指導部はいまだに実権を握っています( "The leadership that has skilfully promoted that fall over the last 15 years is still in power." ). というより,理解する努力をしない選択をしました( "It followed Archbishop Lefebvre while he lived, but it never understood, or it chose to cease understanding, …" ).大司教の第一の目的は教会を魅惑(みわく)的だが腐敗(ふはい)しきった現代世界に調和させようとする公会議派聖職者たちの堕落(だらく)に抵抗するためでした( "… why he founded the Society in the first place, namely to resist the downfall of Conciliar churchmen seeking to bring the Church into line with the glamorous but corrupt modern world." ).彼がいなくなると, SSPX の指導者たちはたちまち,その魅惑に再び取りつかれてしまいました( "Once he was no longer there, these leaders were all too soon re-possessed by the glamour." ).

いま, SSPX 指導者たちは同会内の老齢(ろうれい)な司祭たちの足を引っ張っており( "Right now they are dragging down with them a number of older SSPX priests, …" ),若い司祭たちを醜(みにく)く変身させようとしています( "… and they are deforming the younger ones." ).老齢な司祭たちについて言えば,第二バチカン公会議直後と同じように( "As for the older priests, just like after Vatican II, …" ),ルフェーブル大司教によって育(はぐく)まれた彼らは,いまの SSPX 内の流れに同調する決断をしない限り,新協会( "the Newsociety" )(訳注・「新しい聖ピオ十世会」の意)によって悪い方向へ捻(ね)じ曲げられることに苦痛を感じていることでしょう( "… those shaped under the Archbishop can be in torment from the Newsociety’s bending them out of shape, unless and until they make the decision to go with the flow, but thereupon their conscience has to be anaesthetized." ). 若い司祭たちについて言えば,これも第二バチカン公会議直後と同じように( "As for the younger priests, just like after Vatican II, …" ),新しい方向へ誤(あやま)り導(みちび)かれ,それが正常だと思いこまされてしまっているため,独力でしか古い方向を探し出せなくなっています( "… having been normally mis-shaped in the new direction, only by themselves can they find the old direction, …" ).なぜなら,彼らはルフェーブル大司教が本当に意図(いと)したことについてなにも教えられていないからです( "… because they are not being taught what the Archbishop was really about. " ).事実上, SSPX の神学校は徐々(じょじょ)に新神学校( "newseminaries" )へと姿を変えています( "In effect, the SSPX seminaries are slowly being turned into newseminaries." ).若い司祭たちには適職(てきしょく)を推薦(すいせん)する世話をしなければならない状況です( "Care must be taken in recommending them for vocations." ) .

そして, SSPX のトップについてはどうでしょう?( "And towards the top of the SSPX ? " )ルフェーブル大司教の教理上の立場に精通(せいつう)している一人の神父について,彼の最近の考え方をご紹介しましょう( "Here is the recent thinking of one who is thoroughly familiar with the doctrinal stand of the Archbishop." ).彼は長い間, SSPX の擁護者(ようごしゃ)でした( "For a long time he was its defender, ….だが,2009年から2011年にかけて行われた教理に関する協議(訳注: SSPX とローマ教皇庁との間で行われた教理上の論議)で,ローマが教理上の誤(あやま)りに固執(こしつ)することがはっきりして以来( "… but since the Doctrinal Discussions of 2009 to 2011 proved that Rome was persevering in its doctrinal error, …" この原理崩壊は SSPX がローマとの教理上の合意を捨て,単なる実質的合意( "a merely practical agreement" )に達するための条件を設定した2012年の SSPX 総会( "the Chapter of 2012" )で確認されたものです( "… now he too, in 2013, approves of the Society’s collapse of principle at the Chapter of 2012 when it renounced a doctrinal agreement and set conditions for a merely practical agreement." ). 実を結ばなかったのは、単にローマ人が SSPX の原理崩壊はまだ不十分と考えたからにすぎません( "Yet he is glad that in practice the collapse bore no fruit ! Surely this was only because the Romans did not yet think the collapse was complete enough, …" ). SSPX は半(なか)ば崩壊しているのに,教会法に則(のっと)った承認(しょうにん)を求めてローマに近づくとしても指導部が同会の完全な崩壊のリスクを冒(おか)すまでのことはしないだろうと考えているのでしょう( "… yet he looks forward to the SSPX leaders renewing contacts with the new Pope, as though, having half collapsed, they do not risk collapsing completely when they crawl back to Rome in pursuit of canonical recognition for the SSPX." ).

この神父の心に一体なにが起きたのでしょうか?( "What has happened to his mind ? " ) 第二バチカン公会議後の専制(せんせい)的な教皇パウロ6世の支配下にあった多数の善良な神父たちと同じように( "Just like many good priests under the tyrannical Paul VI after Vatican II, …" ),彼も自らの心を神の教理から解放(ときはな)し,人間的な流れに同調しようとしているのです( "… he has loosened it from divine doctrine and is making it go with the human flow." ). だが,彼の意思はおそらく, SSPX の強力な敵(てき)への服従を受け入れない(真のカトリック)信仰の実利(じつり)より SSPX の見かけだけの利益を選ぶ方向へ向かっているのでしょう( "… but probably his will is getting set upon preferring the apparent good of the SSPX to the real good of the Faith, which is incompatible with submission to its powerful enemies." ).彼はそのような服従を望む SSPX 指導部との結束(けっそく)を公言(こうげん)することで,自分の信仰を失(うしな)うことはないかもしれません( "By pronouncing his solidarity with the Society leaders who want such a submission, he may not lose the faith himself, …" ).だが,彼がローマの背教者たち( "the Roman apostates" )に柔軟な態度を取ることによって,少なくとも,(彼のその姿勢を通して)多くの他の人々が(真の神への=カトリックの)信仰を失い始めるリスクを冒しているかもしれません( "… but by his new softness towards the Roman apostates he risks at the least making it somewhat easier for a number of other souls to begin losing the true faith." ) .

なぜなら,実際は人間中心の新宗教にひたむきな( "dedicated to the new religion of man" )教会主流派( "the mainstream Church" )に所属するのを望みながら,自分たちは神とルフェーブル大司教の旧(ふる)い(=古い)宗教に忠実だと自分や他人を欺(あざむ)き続けなければならないからです( "As for the SSPX leaders, they are mired in duplicity because they still have to deceive themselves and others that they are faithful to the old religion of God and of Archbishop Lefebvre, when in reality they are wanting to belong to the mainstream Church dedicated to the new religion of man." ).諸々の霊魂の喪失( "the loss of souls" =訳注:信徒を失うこと)と二枚舌は二重の恐怖( "a double horror" )です( "The loss of souls and the duplicity are a double horror. " ).

多くの読者から私が権限の機能不能について書いた2週間前のエレイソン・コメンツに苦言が呈(てい)せられました( "A number of readers complained at the “Eleison Comments” of two weeks ago on authority being crippled." ).「差し迫った神の懲罰」( " the “imminent Chastisement” " )が起きた後は,正常なカトリック教の土台の上にカトリック教会の修道会を築くことなど不可能だというエレイソン・コメンツの論調から類推して( "From its argument that on this side of the “imminent Chastisement” no further Catholic Congregation can be founded on a normal Catholic basis, …" ),読者の方々は神の介入を待つ以外に一司教ができることなどなにもないと私が考えているのではないかと結論づけました( "… they concluded that I believe there is nothing more for a bishop to do than to wait for God to intervene. " ).だが,もしそうだとすれば,私が2週間のアジア旅行を終え,いまアイルランドに滞在しているのは何故でしょうか( "But in that case why did I just spend two weeks in Asia, and why am I now in Ireland ? " )? 同じように読者の方々は,私が今後司教を聖別することなどないだろうと結論づけています( "Likewise they conclude that I will never consecrate another bishop." ). I say – God willing – just wait." ).

実際のところ,聖ピオ十世会( "the Society of St Pius X" = SSPX )本部が依然として同会を公会議派ローマ(教皇庁)の懐へ導き入れるつもりでいる以上,信仰を持ち続けようと努力している人々を訪れ励ましたりするなど,一司教としてなすべきことは多々あります( "In fact there is a great deal for a bishop to do to visit and encourage souls striving to keep the Faith when Headquarters of the Society of St Pius X is obviously still intent upon taking it into the arms of Conciliar Rome." ).昨年6月17日,フェレー司教( "Bishop Fellay" )は当時の教皇ベネディクト16世に書簡を送り,「必要な浄化( "the necessary clarifications" )に到達するため,(ローマとの和解へつながる)この道をたどるあらゆる努力を継続する所存です」と伝えました( "On June 17 Bishop Fellay wrote to Benedict XVI, “I do intend to continue to make every effort to pursue this path (of reconciliation with Rome) in order to arrive at the necessary clarifications”. " ).同書簡で,フェレー司教は「不幸なことに,SSPX の現状では」自分が4月中旬に明らかにした教理宣言に対するローマの6月13日付け対案を「受け入れるわけにはまいりません」と書いています( "And in the same vein, “Unfortunately, in the present situation of the Society” Rome’s counter-proposal of June 13 to his Doctrinal Declaration of mid-April “will not be accepted.” " ).ということは,もし SSPX がローマの示した条件を受け入れていたとすれば幸運だった,ということなのでしょうか?( "Then it would have been fortunate if the Society had accepted Rome’s terms ? " )

に対して,私たちは彼がほかの人宛てに書いた書簡からの引用を所持しています( "Against this written evidence (made public by Headquarters !) of Bishop Fellay’s on-going determination to sell out the Archbishop’s Society, …" ).彼は( SSPX の)フランス管区長( "the French District Superior" )に対し,自分が「不幸にして」と書いたのは「教皇だけのため」だったと伝え,一方ベルギーのカルメル女子修道院長( "the Carmelite Mother Superior" )に対しては「ローマとの実務的な合意を求めるつもりは全くない」と伝えています( "… we have quotes of his to the French District Superior that the “unfortunately” he only wrote “for the sake of the Pope”, and to the Carmelite Mother Superior in Belgium that he “never intended to pursue a practical agreement with Rome.” " ). 悲しいかな,フェレー司教は聴衆によって言葉を適宜使い分ける実績のある方ですから,上記の引用で彼に(ルフェーブル)大司教が創設された SSPX を売り渡す意図などないことが証明されたとは決して言えません( "Alas, Bishop Fellay has such a track-record for adapting his words to his audience that quotes like these by no means disprove his intention to sell out the Archbishop’s Society." ).フェレー司教は心の中で自ら備え持つ精神的家具( "the mental furniture" )の位置を移動させる驚くべき能力の持ち主であり,そのことだけを単独でエレイソン・コメンツに取り上げるに値します( "His astonishing ability to move the mental furniture around in his mind deserves an “Eleison Comments” all on its own, …" ).だが,それは別にして,いまや「抵抗運動( "the Resistance" )」と呼ばれるようになってきたものが世界中で高まりつつあるとしたら,皆さんは不思議に思われるでしょうか?( "… but in the meantime is it any wonder if what is coming to be called the “Resistance” is rising independently all over the world ? " )

私は5月24日から6月6日までシャザール神父( "Fr Chazal" )と共に,彼の指導下にある400人ほどの信徒の多くを訪ね,韓国,フィリピン,シンガポールで50回以上の堅振(=堅信)式ミサ聖祭を執り行いました( "Between May 24 and June 6 I visited with Fr Chazal a good part of his flock of some 400 souls, and I gave over 50 Confirmations in South Korea, the Philippines and Singapore." ). He has brilliant insights and is very funny into the bargain." ).もしお会いする機会があれば,インド人政治家の物まねをお願いするといいでしょう (彼によるとインド人はタフで,この点は「間違いない」とのことです) ( "If ever you meet him, ask him to do his imitation of an Indian politician ( he says the Indians are tough, and “can take it”)." ).

韓国では, SSPX の方向転換がとげとげしい内部分裂を引き起こし,その結果, SSPX の最初の聖堂の寄贈者がもう一つ別の聖堂を寄贈しました( "In South Korea the Society’s change of direction caused a harsh split, with the result that the donor of the original chapel merely donated another." ).私はその寄贈者の娘さまの結婚式を執り行う光栄に浴しました( "I had the pleasure of performing the marriage of the donor’s daughter." ). 以下「新協会」と記す.)(訳注2後述)を逃れようとしていました( "In the Philippines, just as I arrived, an older priest who fled the Newchurch years ago to work with the Society was fleeing the Newsociety to work with the Resistance." ).彼はシャザール神父が計画している神学校の設立準備を任されているようで( "He looks like being entrusted with the beginnings of a seminary which Fr Chazal wants to launch, …" ),それに加えて,フィリピン中部各地の諸施設で同神父に代わって大変な仕事を引き受けることになりそうです( "… and he will in addition have his work cut out for him in centres throughout the central Philippines." ).シンガポールは西洋式物質主義の東のショーウィンドウですが,ここでは相変わらず善良な中国系一家とその友人たちが SSPX の新協会への移行を牛耳(ぎゅうじ)っています( "In Singapore, a show-case in the East of Western-style materialism, still a good Chinese family with their friends have a firm grip on the change from the Society to the Newsociety." ).シャザール神父は新協会をExSPX (訳注・=「元(=前は)聖ピオ十世会」の意味合い)と呼んでいますが,これは真実が新教会 "the Newchurch",すなわち新しいミサ聖祭 "the Novus Ordo" を弱体化させつつあるように,やがて真実によって弱体化されるでしょう( "Truth will undermine this ExSPX, as Fr Chazal calls it, just as truth is undermining the Newchurch, or the Novus Ordo."

多数の人々は天国への道に踏(ふ)みとどまっています( "Here are many souls to sustain on their way to Heaven." ).私に司教として聖別してほしいと願う候補者はおられるでしょうか?( "Do I have any candidates offering themselves for consecration as bishops ? " )

多くの善良な信徒の人たちは聖ピオ十世会( "the Society of St. Pius X" = SSPX )に取って代わる新しい修道会 "Congregation" が設立されることを願っています( "A number of good souls wish that a Congregation were founded to replace the Society of St Pius X." ). そう考える理由はここで説明するに値(あたい)するでしょう( "But while I share their fear that the SSPX is presently well on its way to disabling its formerly glorious defence of Catholic Faith and life, and while I therefore sympathize with their desire to see another Congregation like it to take its place, I do not believe that that is possible, and I think it is worth explaining why." ).

1970年,ルフェーブル大司教( "Archbishop Lefebvre" )はSSPX の設立および活動の指針となる諸原則の憲章( "the charter of principles" )つまり,同会会則( "its Statutes" )を書かれました( "When in 1970 Archbishop Lefebvre wrote the charter of principles in line with which the future SSPX would be founded and would function, namely its Statutes, …" ).その時,大司教が重要と考えたのは SSPX の最初の住所が置かれたカトリック教区の司教から同会則の正式承認(しょうにん)を取りつけることでした( "… it was for him of great importance to obtain the official approval of them by the bishop of the Catholic diocese in which the original house of the SSPX was situated." ).彼に関する限り,承認の有無(うむ)はカトリック教会(所属)の一修道会( "a Congregation of the Catholic Church" )を設立するのか,それとも単なる彼自身の私的団体を立ち上げるのかという大きな違いを意味しました( "As far as he was concerned, obtaining or not obtaining that approval meant all the difference between founding a Congregation of the Catholic Church and launching a private association of his own." ).彼はカトリック修道会の設立に多大な関心を抱(いだ)いており,私的団体創設はあまり望んでいませんでした( "He had every interest in founding a Catholic Congregation, far less interest in launching a private institution." ).

実際のところ,ルフェーブル大司教は承認獲得(かくとく)のためジュネーブ,ローザンヌ,フリブール教区を統括していたシャリエール司教( "Bishop Charrière" )に会いに行きましたが,計画がうまく運ぶと期待していませんでした( "In fact when he went to see Bishop Charrière of the Diocese of Geneva, Lausanne and Fribourg to obtain that approval, he was not hopeful." ).当時すでに,(第二)公会議革命が進行中で,彼が書いた会則の趣旨(しゅし)と真っ向(まっこう)から対立していました( "The Conciliar Revolution was by then well under way, and it was directly contrary to what the Statutes projected." ). おそらく,自分が間もなく退任することを知っていたからでしょう( "Providentially however, Bishop Charrière gave his approval, perhaps because he knew he was to retire soon afterwards." ).いずれにせよ,ルフェーブル大司教は嬉々(きき)としてエコンヌ( "Écône" )に戻りました( "In any case the Archbishop returned exultant to Écône, …" ).一説によると,彼は会則を得意満面(とくいまんめん)で高々(たかだか)と手にかざしたほどでした( "… and one report even tells of him waving the Statutes triumphantly in the air." ).

この承認が意味したことは,それ以降,ルフェーブル大司教に関する限り,カトリック教会の修道会を設立する教会の権限を得たということでした( "What that meant to him was that from then on, as far as he was concerned, he had the Church’s authority to build a Congregation of the Church, …" ).数年後,ローマ(教皇庁)(以下,「ローマ」)はその権限を取り戻そうとしますが,その試(こころ)みは教会の法律に照らして本質的に不当(ふとう)だったため,大司教は SSPX 内部で一修道会の総長としての伝統的な権限を行使し続けることを決して躊躇(ちゅうちょ)されませんでした( "… and while a few years later Rome might attempt to take back that authorisation, the attempt was so intrinsically unjust according to Church law that the Archbishop never hesitated to continue exercising inside the SSPX all the authority of a classic Superior of a Congregation." ).この伝統的なカトリック教の権限とは,たとえばそれを嘘(うそ)に結びつけ歴代(れきだい)の公会議派教皇たちがカトリック教会を事実上破壊するとか,それを実質的な公会議派ローマとの合意に結びつけ SSPX を事実上取りつぶしてしまうほどの力を持つものです( "That classic Catholic authority has such power that by harnessing it to lies the Conciliar Popes have been able virtually to destroy the Universal Church, and by its being harnessed to a practical agreement with Conciliar Rome it is now virtually destroying the SSPX." ).他方, SSPX 外部の諸々の司祭,尼僧(にそう),一般信者たちに対する権限についていえば,ルフェーブル大司教はけっして一神父,アドバイザー,友人以上の立場を取ろうとしませんでした( "On the other hand, as for authority over priests, nuns and laity outside the SSPX, Archbishop Lefebvre never arrogated to himself any other than that of a father, adviser and friend." ).

だが,シャリエール司教の時代はずっと前に終わっています( "But the days of a Bishop Charrière are long since gone." ).いま,教会主流派の中に思慮分別(しりょふんべつ)ある司教たちがはたして何人残っているでしょうか?( "How many sane bishops are there left in the mainstream Church ? " ) そして,その中の何人が伝統的かつ反公会議的な会則を承認できるでしょうか?( "And how could any of them today approve of Traditional and anti-Conciliar Statutes ? " ) それは,あたかもルフェーブル大司教がカトリック教会則を手にカトリックの城から出た直後に,公会議派の落とし格子(こうし)( "Consiliar portcullis" )が落とされたようなものです( "It is as though, just after the Archbishop got out of the Catholic castle with the Catholic Statutes in his hand, the Conciliar portcullis crashed down behind him. " ). SSPX 所属の神学者たちのひとりが2009年から2011年に行われた教理に関する協議(=教理上の論議,"the Doctrinal Discussions" のこと)の後で,ローマの神学者たちについて「彼らは精神を病(や)んでいるが権限を持っている」と述べています( " “They are mentally sick, but they have the authority,” as one of the four SSPX theologians said about the Roman theologians after the Doctrinal Discussions of 2009-2011." ). そして, SSPX は長続(ながつづ)きしませんでした( "The SSPX is surely the last in line of the classic Congregations to be founded, at least until after the Chastisement. And it has not lasted long. " ).

私の意見では,以上のことが「直(なお)らないものは我慢(がまん)するしかない」という諺(ことわざ)の理由です( "That is why, in my opinion, “What cannot be cured must be endured.” " ). それがいまの私にせいぜいできることです( "And that is why, right now, I envisage being little more than father, adviser and friend for any souls calling for a bishop’s leadership and support. Even that is task enough." ). 神が私たちすべてと共にあらんことを( "May God be with us all." ).

読者の皆さん,聖ピオ十世会( "the Society of St. Pius" = SSPX )本部が1年前の4月15日に出した教理宣言 (きょうりせんげん)( "the Doctrinal Declaration" )の第7節にもう一度話を戻(もど)すのをお許しください( "Forgive me, dear readers, if I return to the seventh paragraph of the Doctrinal Declaration of April 15 a year ago." ). との間の将来のあらゆる関係を規定(きてい)する基盤(きばん)の役割を果(は)たすべくまとめられたものでした( "The Declaration was to serve as no less than a basis for all future relations between the Society of St Pius X and Rome." ). 第7節についていえば,これは混乱に満ちた最高傑作(さいこうけっさく,"a masterpiece of confusion" )です( "On June 13 (not 11) Rome refused it, so SSPX Headquarters may now have repudiated it, but it serves to show what the present SSPX HQ is capable of. As for the seventh paragraph, it is a masterpiece of confusion." 以下が第7節の全文です ( "These “Comments” three weeks ago (EC 300, April 13) explained in part with a twofold distinction, but the confusion requires a fourfold distinction to do it justice. Here is the complete paragraph: " ).

宣言 III,5 : 「カトリック教会,非カトリック諸宗派( "non-catholic confessions" )間の関係および宗教の社会的義務と宗教的自由の権利との関係についての第二バチカン公会議の諸声明および公会議後の教導権(きょうどうけん),( "Declaration III, 5 : “The statements of Vatican II and the post-conciliar Magisterium with regard to the relation between the Catholic Church and non-catholic confessions and to the social duty of religion and the right to religious liberty, …" ) (1)その関係の策定(=考案・案出)についての論述(ろんじゅつ)を教導権にある以前の教理的記述と合致(がっち)させるのが難(むずか)しい場合は( " (1) the formulation of which it is difficult to reconcile with previous doctrinal statements of the Magisterium, …" ), (2)完全かつ中断のない伝統( "Tradition entire and uninterrupted" )の観点から 理解されなければならない( " (2) must be understood in the light of Tradition complete and uninterrupted, …" ), (3)その理解は教会の教導権が以前に教えた諸々の真実と合致するものでなければならない( " (3) in a manner coherent with the truths previously taught by the Church’s Magisterium, …" ), (4)カトリック教教理を伝統とその教導権に対抗させるか,それと断絶させるように仕向けかねないような諸記述の解釈(かいしゃく)はいかなるものも受け入れてはならない( " (4) without accepting any interpretation of these statements which can lead to Catholic doctrine being laid out in opposition to, or breaking with, Tradition and that Magisterium.” " ).」

文中の下線は第7節の策略(さくりゃく)性( "trickery" )を強調するため私が加えたものです( "The underlinings are my own, to highlight the trickery of the paragraph. " ). (1) how it is not the statements of Vatican II that are problematic, but only their “formulation”. We are already moving away from words meaning what they objectively say. Words float around, according to how they are subjectively “understood” (2) or “interpreted” (4)..私たちの心は鋤(すき)と呼ばれる鋤から碇(いかり)を外(はず)すようにされようとしています( "Our minds are being made to slip anchor from a spade being called a spade" ).公会議のばかげたこと( "Consiliar nonsense" )をカトリック教の良識と合致(がっち)させることの客観的不可能性を示さずに( "There is suggested no objective impossibility of reconciling Conciliar nonsense with Catholic sense, …" ),単に両者は主観的に合致させるのが難しいといっているのです(つまり,保守的な伝統的カトリック信徒の暗い心ではということでしょう)( "… they are merely “difficult” to reconcile subjectively (that is to say, in the darkened minds of backward Traditional Catholics). " ).

とくに(2)と(3)に書かれている「観点から」から「合致する」という微妙(びみょう)ながら決定的に違う表現への変化に注目してください( "Notice above all in (2) and (3) the subtle but crucial slide from “in the light of” to “in a manner coherent with”. " ).第二バチカン公会議の目新しい(めあたらしい)主張を伝統の「観点から」本当に正確に理解するなら,両者はまったく相(あい)いれないものと理解することになります( "Truly understanding the Vatican II novelties “in the light of” Tradition is to understand that they are wholly irreconcilable. " ).彼らの目新しい主張を伝統と「合致する」ように理解するというなら,両者は両立(りょうりつ)しうると理解することになるでしょう( "Understanding them “in a manner coherent with” Tradition is to understand them as though they are reconcilable. " ). なぜなら,「観点から」と「合致する」は同じことを意味しないからです( "Our minds are being made to slide again, because “in the light of” and “in a manner coherent with” do not mean the same thing. " ).確かに(4)に書かれている通り,公会議の目新しい主張を伝統および長い年月を経た教導権と対立させるような主観的理解はいかなるものもきっぱり拒(こば)むべきです( "Sure enough, (4) any subjective understanding of the novelties that makes them clash with Tradition and the age-old Magisterium is absolutely to be rejected. " ).

このように見てくると,(2)は「完全かつ中断のない伝統」に敬意(けいい)を払(はら)っているようですからカトリックの良識と合致しうるかもしれません( "Thus clause (2) may tip the hat to “Tradition complete and uninterrupted”, and so (2) could be aligned with Catholic sense, …" ).しかし,(3)は現代人のたわごと( "modernist nonsense" )を勧(すす)めているようですし,(4)はそのたわごとをさらに強調しています( "… but (3) suggests modernist nonsense, and (4) drives home the nonsense. " ).したがって,この第7節は全体的に見れば,私たちを真実の影( "a shadow of truth" )から「解釈学的継続性(かいしゃくがくてきけいぞくせい)」( "the hermeneutic of continuity" )という全(まった)くの誤(あやま)りへ段階的に導(みちび)こうとするきわめて巧妙(こうみょう)な試(こころ)みだといえます( "Thus the paragraph as a whole constitutes a most clever step-wise movement from a shadow of truth to the outright error of the “hermeneutic of continuity”, …" ). 「言葉は僕(ぼく)が言う意味を持つだけさ」 と,ハンプティ・ダンプティ(訳注・英国の童話〈どうわ〉に出てくる卵男〈たまごおとこ〉)が怒鳴(どな)るでしょう( "… which is pure Alice in Wonderland – “Words mean what I say they mean”, thunders Humpty Dumpty. " ).

It may not have been the Superior General of the SSPX." ).だが,第7節を詳(くわ)しく検討(けんとう)した後(あと)で,それが心をカトリック教の真実から公会議の誤りへ導こうと意図(いと)されたものであることを否定できる方(かた)が果たしているでしょうか( "But can anybody who studies it carefully deny that, as it stands, it is designed to lead minds from Catholic Truth into Conciliar error ? " )? 第7節は異端者(いたんしゃ)たちがするように言葉に踊(おど)りをさせています( "It makes words dance like heretics make them dance, …" ).言葉に踊りをさせる異端者は人々に信仰を失(うしな)わせ地獄に堕(お)ちます( "… and heretics that make words dance make souls lose their faith and fall into Hell." ).この第7節に責任があるのが誰であれ,破門(はもん)すべきです( "Whoever was responsible for this seventh paragraph, let him be anathema ! " )!

昨年4月15日,聖ピオ十世会( "the Society of St. Pius" = SSPX )総長( "the Superior General = SG" )は同会が主流派教会へ復帰する根拠として教理宣言 ( "the Doctrinal Declaration" ) を起草しましたが,この内容が一般公開されたのは一年近く経ってからでした( "The Doctrinal Declaration of April 15 of last year, drawn up by the Superior General (SG) of the Society of St Pius X as a basis for the Society’s reintegration into the mainstream Church, has emerged nearly one year later into public view." ).その宣言 は SG が第二バチカン公会議派ローマ人たち( "the Conciliar Romans" )と伝統派の人たち( "Tradionalists" )の双方を満足させるために考案したものでした( SG は現に「宣言は黒もしくはバラ色のどちらの色の眼鏡(がんきょう)を通して読んでいただいても結構」と述べています)( "It was designed by the SG to please both the Conciliar Romans and Traditionalists (“It can be read with dark or rose-coloured glasses,” he said in public)." ). 彼らはこれを( SSPX が )自分たちの方向へ向かう「一歩前進」( an ”advance” )だと公言しました( "It did please the Romans who declared that it represented an “advance” in their direction." ). 彼らは(宣言 の中身を知っており)それをルフェーブル大司教 ( "Archbishop Lefebvre" ) のカトリック信仰についての立場を裏切(うらぎ)るに等(ひと)しい曖昧(あいまい)な文書だと受け止めました( "It did not please Traditionalists who saw in it (what they knew of it) such ambiguity as to represent a betrayal of Archbishop Lefebvre’s stand for the Catholic Faith, …" ). ).

事実,SG はローマ人たちの決断を受け入れるため6月11日にローマで彼らに会いましたが,そのとき彼はローマ人たちが宣言 を受け入れるだろうと十分に予期していました( "In fact when the SG met the Romans on June 11 in Rome to receive their decision, he fully expected they would accept it." ). この4月7日付けの書簡は SSPX の3人の司教が連名で SG 宛てに送ったものです( "Numerous observers speculate that if they did not accept it, it was only because the intervening publication of the April 7 Letter of the Three Bishops to the SG showed the Romans that he would not be able to bring the whole Society with him into the bosom of their Conciliar Rome, …" ).それ以前には, SG は自(みずか)らが SSPX を公会議派ローマへ導くとローマ人たちに確約していたようですし,ローマ人たちも彼がそうするだろうと期待していました( "… as he may have given them to understand he could do, and as they wanted him to do." ).ローマ人たちは SSPX 内部に再度(さいど)分裂(ぶんれつ)が起こり伝統派が再び息を吹き返すことがないよう望んでいました( "They did and do not want another split to start Tradition all over again. " ).

事(こと)の真相は別にして,教理宣言 の提案がもしローマに受け入れられたとすれば SSPX は破滅(はめつ)したのではないかという点だけについては大きな論争が残ります( "Be all that as it may, space remains here for nothing but one major argument that the proposal of the Doctrinal Declaration, had it been accepted by Rome, would have destroyed the SSPX." ).ルフェーブル大司教は,第二バチカン公会議が以前の教会の教えとの絶縁(ぜつえん)もしくは不和(ふわ)を求めるものだと公言し,それを証明されました( "Archbishop Lefebvre declared, and proved, that Vatican II was a break or rupture with previous Church teaching." ). ).したがって,その誇りとする第二バチカン公会議に対する伝統派運動の継続的な抵抗に直面した教皇ベネディクト16世は,2005年の就任直後に公表した「(聖書)解釈学的継続性(かいしゃくがくてきけいぞくせい)」( "the “hermeneutic of continuity” " )の中で,伝統に(客観的に)相反(あいはん)する公会議の立場は,(主観的に)相反しないと解釈されるべきだと宣言されました( "So, confronted by the on-going resistance of that movement to his beloved Vatican II, Benedict XVI proclaimed at the outset of his pontificate in 2005 the “hermeneutic of continuity”, whereby the Council (objectively) contradicting Tradition was to be (subjectively) so interpreted as not to contradict it." ).これにより,公会議と伝統との間には絶縁も不和もないというわけです( "Thus there would be no break or rupture between it and Catholic Tradition." ).

さて,教理宣言 の第7節( III, 5 )を読んでください( "Now see the seventh paragraph (III, 5) of the Doctrinal Declaration. " ).ここでは,以前の教会のあらゆる教えとの調和がとりにくい第二バチカン公会議の諸声明は(1)「教会の以前の教導権(きょうどうけん,"the Church’s preceding Magisterium" )が教える真実に従い,完全かつ中断のない伝統( "Tradition entire and uninterrupted" )の観点から理解されなければならない,(2)カトリック教の教理を伝統およびその教導権との対立もしくは反目(はんもく)に導(みちび)くような第二バチカン公会議の諸声明のどんな解釈をも受け入れない」と宣言しています( "It declares that Vatican II statements difficult to reconcile with all previous Church teaching, (1) “must be understood in the light of Tradition entire and uninterrupted, in line with the truths taught by the Church’s preceding Magisterium, (2) not accepting any interpretation of those statements which can lead Catholic doctrine to be exposed in opposition or rupture with Tradition and that Magisterium.” " ).

最初の(1)の部分は,「調和がとりにくい」第二バチカン公会議の目新(まあたら)しい主張は,それが以前のカトリック教の教えと客観的に矛盾(むじゅん)する場合すべて撥(は)ねつけるという意味である限り非(ひ)の打ちどころがないほど正しいでしょう( "The first part here (1) is perfectly true, so long as it means that any Conciliar novelty “difficult to reconcile” will be flatly rejected if it objectively contradicts previous Church teaching." ).だが,(1)の記述は(2)が公会議の目新しい主張はどれも伝統に反目(はんもく)しないと解釈してよいというのであれば,直ちに(2)と矛盾してしまいます( "But (1) is directly contradicted by (2) when (2) says that no Conciliar novelty may be “interpreted” as being in rupture with Tradition." ).これは,サッカーチームはすべて青いシャツを着用しなければならないが,ほかの色のシャツもすべて青色と解釈すべきというようなものです( "It is as though one said that all football teams must wear blue shirts, but football shirts of any other colour are all to be interpreted as being nothing other than blue ! " ). But it is pure “hermeneutic of continuity”." ).

世界的に組織された(カトリック)信仰の最後の砦(とりで)を守る兵士たちは自分たちの司令官がなにを考えているのか分かっているでしょうか?( "Now do the soldiers holding the last fortress of the Faith that is organised worldwide realize what their Commander is thinking ? " ) 司令官が発した SSPX の教理の厳粛(げんしゅく)な宣言が,実は彼が敵(てき)のリーダーのように考えていることを示しているのに気づいているでしょうか?( "Do they realize that his solemn declaration of SSPX doctrine shows him to be thinking like an enemy leader ? " ) 兵士たちは(カトリック)信仰の諸々の敵のように考えるよう導(みちび)かれることに満足するでしょうか?( "Are they happy that they are being led to think like the enemies of the Faith ? だから,非カトリック教的な諸々の考えはカトリック教的だと「解釈」されるべきだ,というのです( "All ideas must be Catholic, so non-Catholic ideas will be “interpreted” as Catholic." ). 敵方(てきかた)の考えは( SSPX )本部( "in Headquarters" )にあります( "Wake up, comrades ! Enemy thinking is in Headquarters." ).
