私たちの主イエズス・キリストの生涯（しょうがい）で聖土曜日とはどういう日だったのでしょうか．それは主が十字架にかけられ恐ろしい死を遂（と）げた日と壮麗（そうれい）な御復活を遂げられた日に挟（はさ）まれたその日のことでした（ "Holy Saturday in the life of Our Lord was that day between his appalling death on the Cross and his glorious Resurrection, …" ）．この日，彼の人間としての肉体は，魂（たましい）もなく死んだ状態のまま，暗い墓（はか）の中に，人の目にも触（ふ）れずに，横たえて置かれていました（ "… when his human body, lifeless without its human soul, lay in the dark tomb, unseen to human eye." ）．私たちの主の敵たちは彼を完全に打ち負かせることに成功し，人の姿をとられた神は全く輝きを失ってしまったかのように映（うつ）りました（ "Our Lord’s enemies seemed so successfully to have crushed him that the Incarnate God was in complete eclipse, …" ）．そして，私たちの聖母だけが彼女の神聖な息子にゆるぎない信仰を持ち続けました．（ "… and only the faith of Our Lady in her Divine Son remained unshaken." ）（訳注後記１）． 聖母は主のほかの信奉（しんぽう）者たちを支えざるをえませんでした（ "All his other followers she had to sustain, …" ）．なぜなら，主（イエズス・キリスト）への信奉（しんぽう）者たちのなかで最も信心深い者でさえうろたえ喪失（そうしつ）感に打（う）ちひしがれていたからです（ "… because even the most devout of them felt bewildered and lost." ）．
現在キリストの神秘的な肉体と同じように，カトリック教会はいま彼の肉体がたどった生涯の道のりをたどっています（ "Now as being the Mystical Body of Christ, the Catholic Church follows the life’s course of his physical body. " ）．教会はその２０００年の歴史を通して常にキリストの敵たちから迫害を受け，世界のいたるところで何度となく事実上消し去られてきました（ "Down all its 2,000 years of history the Church has always been persecuted by the enemies of Christ, and in many parts of the world at various times it has been virtually wiped out." ）．
だが，今日の状況は別にして，教会はこの間（かん），決して完全な暗闇（くらやみ）に陥（おちい）ることなく踏（ふ）みとどまってきました（ "Yet surely it has never been going into complete eclipse like it seems to be doing today." ）．神は自（みずか）らの教会を教皇の下（もと）にまとまる王国としてお造りになられました（ "God designed his Church as a monarchy, to be held together by the Pope, …" ）．そして，私たちは今回，一教皇が退位（たいい）するのを見届けました（ "… and we have just seen a Pope resigning, …" ）．退位の理由の一部は，明らかに教皇自身が現代の民主的な考え方に心を奪われてしまい，自らの最高位の職務に全幅（ぜんぷく）の確信を持てなくなったということでしょう（ "… no doubt in part because he himself, mesmerized by modern democratic thinking, never fully believed in his own supreme office." ）．自分の紋章（もんしょう，"coat of arms" ）から教皇冠を取り払い，常々「ローマの司教」（ "Bishop of Rome" ）だと自称していた彼が（ "Taking the papal tiara off his coat of arms, and signing himself always as “Bishop of Rome”, …" ），２月に退位したときの真意がなんであったかにかかわらず，人間的な言い方をすれば，彼が自ら取った行動で教皇という神聖な制度を傷つけたのは明白です（ "… whatever were his intentions when he resigned in February, he surely helped, humanly speaking, to undermine the divine institution of the Papacy." ）．
ひとつ確かなことは，教皇ベネディクト１６世の退任，それに続いたコンクラーベ"conclave" により，キリストの敵たちが教皇職の権威を失墜（しっつい）させるためになすべきことをすべてやったということでしょう（ "Certainly by Benedict XVI’s resignation and by the succeeding conclave the enemies of Christ will have been doing all they could for their part to undo the Papacy." ）． 敵たちは私たちの時代に広くはびこる背教を理由として神を罰することにより，神の教会を支配する大きな権力を神から得ました（ "By a just punishment of God for the universal apostasy of our age, they have received from him a great power over his Church." ）．彼らは数世紀にわたりバチカンを支配するための拠点（きょてん）作りに奔走（ほんそう）してきました．そして，いまや彼らはその拠点に立てこもったのです（ "They have been working for centuries to get a stranglehold over the Vatican, and they are now entrenched there." ）．敬虔（けいけん）ながらもちっぽけな聖ピオ十世会に道を譲（ゆず）る気など毛頭（もうとう）ない彼らは，２００年前にアン・キャサリン・エマリッチ（ "Anne Catherline Emmerich" ＝ドイツ人でドイツ名はアンナ・カタリナ・エンメーリッヒ）が幻視（げんし）で見たように，教会の建物の石を一つずつ取り除き破壊しようとしています（ "With no intention of giving way to a pious little Society, they are, as Anne Catherine Emmerich saw in a vision 200 years ago, dismantling the Church stone by stone." ）．人間的な言い方をすれば，今日の私たちの主イエズス・キリストの信奉者たちは，その昔の聖土曜日のときと同じように，ほとんど希望を持てない状態です（ "Humanly speaking, today’s followers of Our Lord have as little seeming hope as they had on the original Holy Saturday." ）．
しかし，私たちの主ご自身と同じように，カトリック教会は単純な人間的事象（じしょう）ではありません．１８４６年，（フランス）サレットの聖母（ "Our Lady of Salette " ）は私たちの時代について次のように述べられました：-- （ "But no more than Our Lord himself is the Catholic Church a merely human affair. In 1846 Our Lady of Salette said about our own times:-- …" ）「行いの正しい人々（＝高潔〈こうけつ〉な人々）には大きな苦悩が降りかかり非常に苦しめられるでしょう．彼らの祈り，悔悛（かいしゅん）・（罪の）償（つぐな）い，涙は天に昇（のぼ）るでしょう．そして，神の民（ "God's people" ）はすべて赦（ゆる）しと慈悲（じひ，＝憐れみ〈あわれみ〉）とを乞（こ）い，私の助けと取り成し（とりなし）を求めるでしょう （ " “The righteous will suffer greatly. Their prayers, penance and their tears will rise up to Heaven, and all of God’s people will beg for forgiveness and mercy and will plead for my help and intercession." ）．そして，その時イエスズ・キリストはその正義と偉大な慈悲の行い（ "act of his justice and great mercy" ）をもって自らの天使たちに命じ敵たちをことごとく死に至らしめるでしょう（ "And then Jesus Christ in act of his justice and great mercy will command his Angels to have all his enemies put to death." ）．一瞬にして，イエスズ・キリストの教会の迫害者たちや罪に陥（おちい）った者たちはすべて滅び，この世（＝地上・地球上・全世界）は砂漠のようになるでしょう（ "Suddenly the persecutors of the Church of Jesus Christ and all those given over to sin will perish, and the earth will become desert-like." ）．それから，平和が訪（おとず）れ，人間は神と和解（仲直り）し，・キリストは人間から仕えられ，崇拝され，賛美されるでしょう（ "And then peace will be made, and man will be reconciled with God, Jesus Christ will be served, worshipped and glorified." ）．キリストの愛がいたるところに行き渡（ゆきわた）るでしょう…キリストの福音がいたるところで説かれ…そして人間は神を恐れて生きるようになるでしょう」（ "Charity will flourish everywhere… The Gospel will be preached everywhere… and man will live in fear of God.” " ）．
言い換えれば，神は間違いなく自らの教会を今の悲惨な状態から立ち直らせてくださるでしょう（ "In other words, God will most certainly resurrect his Church from its present distress." ）．もし，暗闇（くらやみ）がもっと暗くなったら ―― 間違いなくそうなるでしょうが ―― 私たちはただひたすらこれまで以上に神の御母から離れないようにし（ "If its eclipse becomes still darker, as it is sure to do, let us merely hold more closely than ever to the Mother of God, …" ），主の使徒たちや弟子たちが最初の聖土曜日にしたように私たちの不信 "disbelief" が彼女（聖母）に重くのしかかることがないようにするため固く決意しましょう（ "and let us resolve now not to weigh upon her then by our disbelief, as did Our Lord’s Apostles and disciples on the first Holy Saturday." ）．聖母の（お生みになった）神聖な神の御独り子（ "her Divine Son" ）とその唯一の真実の教会に対する私たちのゆるぎない信仰で彼女（聖母）の汚（けが）れのない無原罪（むげんざい）のみ心をお喜ばせするようにしましょう（ "Let us undertake to rejoice her Immaculate Heart with our unshakeable faith in her Divine Son and his one true Church." ）．
