過去（かこ）２０年間，私は聖ピオ十世会（ "the Society of St Pius X" = SSPX ）がいずれ破（は）たんするかもしれないと定期的（ていきてき）に言い続（いいつづ）けてきました．私の同僚（どうりょう）たちは，私がそういうことを言うのを決して好（この）みませんでした．また，一部の人たちの考えとは正反対（せいはんたい）に，私自身はそういうことを言って楽しいと思（おも）ったこともありません．だが， SSPX は確かに破たんしそうになっています．一読者が最近私にある引用文（いんようぶん）を送ってくださいました．その引用は私が１９８４年に授品式（じゅひんしき）（訳注後記１）でおこなった説教（せっきょう）から抜き出（ぬきだ）したものです．むろん私は自分が説教で述（の）べたことなどすっかり忘（わす）れていました（以下は私の説教の内容（ないよう）です）：--
「教会の始まり（きょうかいの はじまり）には，戦（たたか）うイエズス・キリストは従者（じゅうしゃ）たちをカタコンブとそこでの迫害（はくがい）から表（おもて）の場（ば）に導き出（みちびき だ）しました（ " “At the beginning of the Church Militant Jesus Christ led his followers through the catacombs and persecution out into the open, …" ）．教会の終わり（きょうかいの おわり）には，戦（たたか）うイエズス・キリストは従者（じゅうしゃ）たちを表の場（おもての ば）のテントでの迫害（はくがい）から再（ふたた）びカタコンブへ導（みちび）くでしょう（ "… and at the end of the Church Militant He may well lead them from the tent in the open field through persecution back to the catacombs. Regularly I tell them (…) that …" ） 全世界（ぜんせかい）が皆さんに敵対（てきたい）していること； 全世界がたちまち破滅（はめつ）すること； SSPX はあっけなく滅（ほろ）びること； 将来（しょうらい）は真っ暗（まっくら）で，たとえいま暗闇（くらやみ）でなくても先行（さきゆ）きは悲観的（ひかんてき）であることを（ "… the whole world is against them; that the whole world is going to hell in a hand-basket; that the Society of St. Pius X could easily perish; that the future is dark and where there is no gloom it is full of doom. " ）． 皆さんお分（わ）かりでしょうか，私は確信（かくしん）します．もし私の恐ろしい予感（おそろしい よかん）が実際（じっさい）に起（お）きたら，神学生の皆さんたちはきっと驚（おどろ）いて喜（よろこ）ぶことになるだろう，と！ （ "Do you know, I do believe that if any of my dire forebodings actually came true, seminarians would be pleasantly surprised !” " ）」
私がいま SSPX に対（たい）する「抵抗運動（ていこう うんどう）」の中（なか）になにを見（み）ているとお考（かんが）えでしょうか？ （ "And what do I think I see now in the “Resistance” ?" ） それは，第二バチカン公会議の廃墟から現れ出た伝統派の生存者たち（ "the remnant of Traditionalists" ）の中から，喜び溢れるカトリック教徒が苦しみ悶え（くるしみ もだ）えながらも着実（ちゃくじつ）に出現（しゅつげん）することです（ "The painful but steady emergence of the joyful remnant of Catholics from the remnant of Traditionalists who emerged from the ruins of Vatican II." ）． SSPX の機構（きこう）や神学校（しんがっこう）に取って代（とって か）わるものを創り出（つくり だ）す必要性（ひつよう せい）について私をその気（き）にさせる材料（ざいりょう）はまだ何（なに）もありません（ "Nothing yet persuades me of the need for a structure or a seminary to replace those of the SSPX, …" ）．だが，抵抗運動の歴史（れきし）はまだ始（はじ）まったばかりの段階（だんかい）です（ "… but these are early days in the history of the Resistance." ）．私がいま必要（ひつよう）と考（かんが）えるのはイングランドに抵抗運動の活動拠点（かつどう きょてん）を持（も）つことです．欧州（＝ヨーロッパ）大陸（たいりく）からもロンドン近郊（きんこう）の諸空港（しょ くうこう）からもあまり離（はな）れていないところに抵抗運動の結束（けっそく）を固（かた）めるのに役立（やくだ）つ家屋（かおく）を持（も）ち （ "What I do think is needed is a base of Resistance operations in England, not far from the Continent nor from London airports, bricks and mortar to lend some solidity to the Resistance, …" ），たとえば司祭（しさい）たちがなんのプレッシャーも受けずに最低でも２，３日そこで過（す）ごし，今日（こんにち）の使徒的宣教 "apostolate" の職務（しょくむ）にともなう現実（げんじつ）の諸々の困難（もろもろの こんなん）から立ち直（たち なお）れるようにしたいのです（ "… and to provide, for instance, a refuge where priests can recuperate for at least a few days, under no kind of pressure, from the real hardships of today’s apostolate." ）．

・カトリック司教（しきょう）が男子修道士に司祭の品級の秘蹟を授ける式（しさいの ひんきゅうの ひせきを さずける しき）の呼称（こしょう）．
