数週間前，インターネットのウェブサイト「321gold」に私たちがいま住む世界についての素晴らしい描写（びょうしゃ）が掲載（けいさい）されました（ "A marvellous portrait of our contemporary world appeared a few weeks ago on the Internet website, 321gold." ）．その一文のタイトルは「低落（ていらく），腐敗（ふはい），否認（ひにん），妄想（もうそう），絶望（ぜつぼう）（ "Decline, Decay, Denial, Delusion and Despair" ）という恐ろしいものですが，中身はいたって現実に即（そく）したものです（ "The title is daunting: “Decline, Decay, Denial, Delusion and Despair”, but the content is surely true to life." ）．サイトの著者は，アメリカ東部のいたるところで見られる街の光景から話し始めたあと （ "Starting from a street scene to be found no doubt all over the eastern United States, …" ），今後１５年以内に，私たちが望んだ理念から派生（はせい）した望みもしない副産物として，ジョージ・オーウェル風の独裁（どくさい） （ "Orwellian dictatorship" ） が同国を襲（おそ）うだろうと結論づけています （ "… he concludes that within 15 years an Orwellian dictatorship will descend upon his country as the unwanted effect of wanted causes." ）
今やアメリカは全世界の典型となっているのではないでしょうか （ "But the USA is not typical of the whole world ? " ）？ 世界中の人々がアメリカの生活様式に不本意ながら従っています．「皆さんくれぐれも用心しましょう！」と著者は警告しています（ "The whole world is buying into the American way of life. “Let the buyer beware” ! " ）．
著者はこの秋，ニュージャージー州のワイルドウッドという町を訪れ，通りのいたるところで年齢５０歳以下のぶくぶくに太った男女が大勢，政府の補助金で支給された電動カートに乗って動き回っている光景を目にしたそうです（ "This autumn in the streets of Wildwood, New Jersey, the author observed pavements encumbered with a host of heavily overweight men and women under 50 years of age rolling around town on government-subsidized mobility scooters …" ）．連中はファストフード店をはしごしながら砂糖のたっぷり入ったうまいもの（ "sugar-laden goodies" ）を食べ歩き，その結果さらに太り，乗っているカートが重さに耐えかねて悲鳴をあげているというのです（ "… to visit one fast-food joint after another in order to gorge on sugar-laden goodies which would give their latest model scooters more work than ever." ）．彼が連中につけたおかしな名前を想像できますか？ （ "His amusing name for them ? " ） ― 「強力な移動度増強カートに乗っている太った身障者」というのです（ " “The weight-challenged disabled on their powered mobility enhancement vehicles.” " ）． これはまさしく差別語禁止からの逃げです（ "Such is the flight from reality of “political correctness” and its language. " ）．
著者はこの笑えない喜劇がどうやって生まれたのかを考え次のように述べています（ "The author seeks causes for this tragic-comic effect : … " ）．「かつて所得の１２パーセントを貯蓄していたアメリカ人は誰に説き伏せられて借金まみれ，砂糖づけの生活スタイルに陥り，肥満度統計の上限からはみ出るほどになり，貯金は底をつき，子供や孫に耐えられないほどの借金の重荷を残すようになったのだろうか？」（ "… how can the American people that once saved 12% of their income have been persuaded to frighten the obesity statistics off the end of the charts with a debt-laden, sugar-sodden way of life, with no more savings for themselves and with an unbearable burden of debt being bequeathed to their children and grand-children ? 著者は１９２０年代に現れたそのようなマスターたちの先駆者（せんくしゃ）であるエドワード・バーネーズ（ "Edward Barnays" ）の次の言葉を引用しています（ "He quotes a pioneer of these masters from the 1920’s, Edward Bernays: " ）： 「意識的かつ賢明な大衆操作は民主主義社会における重要な要素である…（ " “The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the masses is an important element in democratic society…" ）… 膨大（ぼうだい）な数の人間がスムーズに機能する社会で共に生きるためには、彼らはそのような方法で協力しあわなければならない…（ "…Vast numbers of human beings must cooperate in this manner if they are to live together as a smoothly functioning society…" ）… 政治，ビジネス，社会的行動，倫理的思考のいずれにおいても，我々は比較的少数の人間によって支配される…（ "… Whether in politics, business, social conduct or ethical thinking, we are dominated by the relatively small number of persons…" ）… そして，その連中は大衆の心理的プロセス，社会的パターンをよくわきまえている（ "…who understand the mental processes and social patterns of the masses.” " ）．」彼らは「国の真の統治者」であり，「大衆心理を陰（かげ）で操（あやつ）る」と，バーネーズは言っています（ " “ They are “the true ruling power of the country,” and they “pull the wires which control the public mind.” " ）．連中の目的は何でしょうか？ 自身の富と権力のためです（ "For what purpose ? For their own wealth and power." ）．
今日の財政，経済危機を自らの利益になるように仕組んだのはほかならぬ彼らです（ "It is they who have organized today’s financial and economic crisis for their own benefit. " ）．サイトの著者は次のように言っています．「彼らは世界経済を破綻（はたん）させ … （ "…They have “wrecked the world economy …" ） … 彼ら自身にとっては無価値の負債を納税者とまだ生まれていない世代に押し付け（ "…shifted their worthless debt onto the backs of taxpayers and unborn generations, …" ），高齢者や貯蓄者から毎年４千億ドルの利子負担をかすめ取ってバスの下に放り出し（ "…thrown senior citizens and savers under the bus by stealing $400 billion per year of interest from them, …" ），自らはバブル期のような利益とボーナスを得て懐（ふところ）を肥（こ）やしているのです（ "…and enriched themselves with bubble-level profits and bonus payments.” " ）．」そして，このような持続（じぞく）不可能な生活様式に終止符（しゅうしふ）を打たなければならなくなったとたんに，目に見えない支配者たちが私たちに用意したものは何かと言えば（ "…And when the plug has to be pulled on this unsustainable way of life, then our invisible masters have prepared for us…" ），何百万発の銃弾で武装された警察を使った１９８４年の「涙の独裁」（ "…a 1984 “dictatorship of tears” with militarized police with millions of bullets, …" ），いたるところに配備された監視カメラ，無人飛行機（ "…surveillance cameras and drones everywhere, …" ），罪状のないままの投獄，等々だというのです（ "…imprisonment without charges and so on and so on." ）．だが，著者はこうした事態を招いた原因は，真実より無知を，健康より病（やまい）を，批判的な考え方よりマスメディアの嘘（うそ）を，自由より安全を選択した市民自身の間違いにあると言っています（ "Yet, says the author, it is the citizens’ own fault who have preferred ignorance to truth, sickness to health, media lies to critical thinking, security to liberty." ）．
彼の称賛に値する分析にただ一つ欠けているものがあります（ "There is only one thing lacking to this admirable analysis: " ）： 十戒にあるように，私たちすべてが死に際して審判（しんぱん）を受ける神の存在を少しでも心にとどめていれば，支配するエリートがこれほど横暴（おうぼう）になり，支配される大衆がこれほど口をつぐんできただろうかという疑問です（ "could our governing elite have run so wild, or our masses have turned so dumb, if either had retained the least sense of a God who judges us all at death, according to Ten Commandments ?
