Let us be hard in mind, in manners gentle.
Softness of mind makes silly, sentimental.
An error is never properly refuted until it is uprooted. In other words truly to overcome an error one needs to show not only that it is an error, but why it is an error. Let us suppose, with last week's “Comments”, that the June 28 statement of the Superior General of the Society of St Pius X, by looking forward to the Society's pious priesthood resolving the Church's crisis of Faith, commits the error of putting the cart of the priesthood before the horse of the Faith. Then let us show that this error has its roots in our age's almost universal undervaluing of the mind and overvaluing of the will, resulting even unconsciously in a scorn for doctrine (except for the Beatles' doctrine of “All you need is luv”).
Already towards the beginning of the Statement there occurs a hint of this error when the Statement says that the central principle condemned in Pascendi, Pius X's great condemnation of modernism, is that of “independence”. No. The principle he constantly condemns as being at the root of modernism is rather agnosticism, the doctrine that the mind can know nothing behind what appears to the senses. Upon that unknowing follows the independence of the mind from its object, followed in turn by the will's declaration of independence from everything else on which it does not want to depend. It is in the nature of things that the mind must first be suicided before the will can declare its independence. So when the Statement puts independence before agnosticism at the heart of Pascendi, that is a hint that the Statement is a part rather of the Church's problem than of its solution.
And where does this downgrading of the mind and doctrine in turn come from ? Primarily from Luther who called human reason a “prostitute”, and who more than anybody else launched Chistendom on its sentimental path to its self-destruction today. But that took all of 500 years ? Yes, because there was natural and Catholic resistance along the way. But Luther was right when he told the Pope that in the end he would destroy him – “Pestis eram vivus, functus tua mors ero, Papa” – A plague to you I was when I had breath, But once I'm dead, O Pope, I'll be your death.
To this radical and gigantic error of the downgrading of mind and doctrine may be attributed two sub-errors in the case of the author of the June 28 Statement: firstly, his misunderstanding of Archbishop Lefebvre, and secondly his too great understanding of Madame Cornaz (pen-name Rossinière).
Like many of us seminarians in Écône when Archbishop Lefebvre himself presided there, Bernard Fellay was rightly enchanted and bewitched by the outstanding example before our very eyes of what a Catholic priest could and should be. But the backbone of his priesthood and of his heroic fight for the Faith was not his piety – many modernists are “pious” – but his doctrine, doctrine of the eternal priesthood, profoundly allergic to liberalism and modernism. Nor did the Archbishop ever say that his Society would save the Church. Rather its priests were to safeguard the Church's priceless treasures for better days.
The person who did say that the Society's priests would save the Church, as Fr Ortiz has reminded us, was Madame Cornaz, a family mother from Lausanne, Switzerland, whose life spanned most of the 20th century, and who between 1928 and 1969 received communications supposedly from Heaven on how married couples should sanctify the priesthood (!). The communications started again in 1995 (!) when she met a Society priest whom she persuaded, and through him Bishop Fellay, that it was the SSPX priests who were destined by Providence to save the Church by propagating her “Homes of Christ the Priest”. With all his authority the Superior General supported her project, but the negative reaction of Society priests made him rapidly renounce it in public. Inwardly however, did her mystical vision of the Society's exalted future stay with him ? It seems quite possible. Like Martin Luther King, the Superior General “has a dream.”

When Father Pfluger speaks, what do we hear?
The religion of man, the Council, loud and clear.
Towards the end of last year, the second-in-command of the Newsociety of St Pius X, Fr. Niklaus Pfluger, gave an interview to a Newsociety magazine in Germany, Der Gerade Weg, in which he answered seven questions ranging over the Church, Tradition, the “Resistance” and the XSPX. Given his important position, his thinking cannot be without interest. Its main lines are presented here below, and then its main flaw.
The Catholic Church is broad, much broader than just the Traditional movement. This movement began in the 1970’s as an understandable reaction of Catholics rendered homeless by the Conciliar revolution, but we will never make Tradition attractive or convincing if we remain mentally stuck in the 1950’s or 1970’s. Catholic Tradition is a vast treasure, not to be confined within the condemnations, which were routine in the 19th and 20th centuries, of modernism, liberalism and Freemasonry. In the 1970’s and 1980’s the SSPX did act as a lifeboat for souls drowning, but in 2014 “our time is different, we cannot stand still.” Church Tradition is one, but traditions are many, and much that is modern is not immoral.
So “we must continually re-position ourselves,” somewhere between denying that there is any crisis of modernism at all in the Church, and denying Church reality, as does the “Resistance.” They turn a purely practical problem of re-positioning into a question of faith, but that “faith” is a fabrication of their own, subjective, personal and in extreme denial of reality — how can Rome not be Catholic? How can Bishop Fellay be Enemy Number One? Ridiculous! The “Resistance” is sectarian, narrow-minded, evil-spirited and divisive.
As for SSPXHQ having betrayed Tradition in 2012, its actions were attacked from both sides, so it acted with reasonable moderation. Its texts were not dogmatic, just responding to circumstances. It did depart from General Chapter decisions of 2006, but who back then could imagine how much less aggressive towards the SSPX Rome would become by 2012? In 2014 our three bishops could all celebrate public Masses in the Basilica of Lourdes!
In brief, the SSPX follows the Spirit, It draws on Tradition. It saved the liturgy (thanks to Archbishop Lefebvre). It is neither monopolistic, nor as disunited or defeated as it may seem. Storms in the Church do continue, but down with conspiracy theories and Apocalypticism, and up with faith, hope and a new youth! (See francefidele.org for the original in German, and a French translation; see abplefebvreforums or cathinfo.com for an English translation)
So where is the flaw in Fr Pfluger’s thinking? It is most clearly seen in the first paragraph above, where he suggests that Tradition can thrive outside of the “19th and 20th century condemnations of modernism, liberalism and Freemasonry.” For Fr Pfluger, as for all liberals, these condemnations are not integral to the Catholic Faith but merely “substantial anchorages” (Cardinal Ratzinger’s own expression), which in a different age the ship of the Church can leave behind, as corresponding no longer to the different circumstances. Therefore if Fr Pfluger does not have a different faith from that of Archbishop Lefebvre, Pius IX, St Pius X, Pius XII, etc., he certainly has a different concept of that Faith, and that different concept underlies all his remarks in the interview quoted.
Thus the problem is much more than just “practical re-positioning.” Today’s Rome is indeed not Catholic. Bishop Fellay is a huge problem. The 2006 General Chapter was implicitly dogmatic. Tradition is not to be made attractive to men, but true to God (mentioned only once, passingly, in the interview). The “Resistance” is far from creating its own “faith.” And so on and so on.

これまで,例えば,パウロ6世は聖職者の欠乏( "the lack of vocations" )(訳注5・1 )を嘆きました(これまで,たとえば,ぱうろ ろくせいは せいしょくしゃの けつぼう〈やくちゅう5・1〉を なげき ました)( "Thus for example Paul VI wept for the lack of vocations." ). ),彼らのリベラリズムと徹底的に戦い,彼らがカトリックの正道に立ち戻るよう祈願しましょう(かれらの りべらりずむと てってい てきに たたかい,かれらが かとりっくの せいどうに たちもどる よう きがん しましょう)( "… but let us for our part fight their liberalism tooth and nail and pray for their return to Catholic sanity, …" ).

聖職者の欠乏( "the lack of vocations" )について:

But the Catholic Church cannot be doomed ! " ) 確(たし)かに,教会は神の御保護(かみの ごほご)によってこの世の終わり(このよの おわり)まで続(つづ)くでしょう(新約聖書・マテオ聖福音書:第28章20節)( "True, by God's protection it will last to the end of the world (Mt. XXVIII, 20), …" ).だが,同時に私たちは神の御言葉から(どうじに わたくしたちは かみの おことば から),末世までに信仰がこの世に(まっせ までに しんこうが このよに)ほとんどなくなっているであろうこと(新約聖書・ルカ聖福音書:第18章8節)( "… but at the same time by God's Word we know that by then the Faith will scarcely be found on earth (Lk. XVIII, 8), …" XIII, 7)を知って(しって)います( "… and that it will have been given to the forces of evil to defeat the Saints (Apoc. XIII, 7)." ). 今(いま)からおよそ150年も前(ひゃく ごじゅうねんも まえ)にです!-- ( "Here is what Cardinal Pie had to say on the matter, some 150 years ago !
私がこのことを伝えたい相手(つたえたい あいて)は,弱気のキリスト教徒(よわきの きりすと きょうと)たち,人気の奴隷(にんきの どれい)( "slaves to popularity" )となっている人(ひと)たち,成功信奉者(せいこう しんぽう しゃ)たち( "worshippers of successes" ),悪魔(あくま)が少(すこ)しでもはびこると動揺(どうよう)してしまう人たちです( "… which is what I wish to tell faint-hearted Christians, slaves to popularity, worshippers of success and shaken by the least advance of evil." ).こういう人たちがどのように感(かん)じようと,神の思し召し(かみの おぼしめし)さえあれば,彼らはこの世の最後の審判の苦しみ(このよの さいごの しんぱんの くるしみ)を免(まぬが)れるでしょう( "Given how they feel, please God they will be spared the agonies of the world's final trial." ).その審判は間(ま)もないことなのでしょうか,それともまだ先(さき)のことなのでしょうか?( "Is that trial close or is it still far off ? 私はその時期(じき)についてあえて推測(すいそく)しないことにします( "Nobody knows, and I will not dare to make a guess." ). ).それは,この世の終わり(よの おわり)が近(ちか)づけば近づくほど,この世は益々(ますます)ひどい状態(じょうたい)になり,嘘(うそ)つきが優位に立つ(ゆうい にたつ)ということです( "… namely that the closer we come to the end of the world, the more and more it is wicked and deceitful men who will gain the upper hand." ).信仰(しんこう)はこの世(よ)にほとんど見(み)られなくなるでしょう( "The Faith will hardly be found on earth, …" ). )
「聖パウロ(せい ぱうろ)にとって,この世の終わりを告げる兆候(このよの おわりをつげる ちょうこう)だった国家と神の分裂,分離,絶縁は日増しに進行(こっかと かみの ぶんれつ,ぶんり,ぜつえんは ひましに しんこう)するでしょう( "The splitting, separating and divorcing of States from God which was for St Paul a sign foretelling the end, will advance day by day." ).常に目に見える社会(つねに めに みえる しゃかい)であり続(つづ)けてきた教会(きょうかい)は,その次元(じげん)が個々人や家庭に矮小化(ここじんや かていに わいしょうか)されて行くでしょう( "The Church, while remaining always a visible society, will be reduced more and more to dimensions of the individual and the home." ).教会の開設当初(かいせつ とうしょ),教会は外へ出(そとへ で)しゃばらないと言(い)っていました( "When she started out she said she was being shut in, …" ). ).だが,教会はこの世の終わり(よの おわり)が近(ちか)づくにつれ,周囲を取り囲まれ(しゅういを とりかこまれ)てしまい,一寸刻みの延命工作(いっすん きざみの えんめい こうさく)をしなければならなくなるでしょう( "… but as she approaches her end on earth, so she will have to fight a rearguard action every inch of the way, being surrounded and hemmed in on all sides." ).過去に規模を広げた教会(かこに きぼを ひろげた きょうかい)ほど,身の程を思い知らされる強い作用(みのほどを おもいしらされる つよい さよう)に晒(さら)されることになるでしょう( "The more widely she spread out in previous ages, the greater the effort will now be made to cut her down to size." ).しまいに教会は紛れもないような敗北を喫し(まぎれも ない ような はいぼくを きっし)( "Finally the Church will undergo what looks like a veritable defeat, …" ),野獣が聖人たちに戦いを挑み打ち負かすことになるでしょう( "… and the Beast will be given to make war on the Saints and to overwhelm them." ).悪魔の横暴は頂点に達するでしょう.」( "The insolence of evil will be at its peak.” " )
と,述(の)べています( "Things are what they are. Their consequences will be what they will be. Why then should we seek to deceive ourselves ?" ).ピィ枢機卿が信仰を家庭以上の規模で守る(しんこうを かてい いじょうの きぼで まもる)ことがいかに難(むずか)しいかを予見した点(よけんした てん)にとくに注目(ちゅうもく)してください( "Notice especially how the Cardinal foresees the impossibility of defending the Faith on any larger scale than just the home." ).だが,そのためには,私はばらばらになった人々(ひとびと)がまとまった社会(しゃかい)を作り出せると得心(つくりだせると とくしん)させられなければなりません( "… but I have yet to be persuaded that with disintegrated people one can make an integrated society." ). -- how Our Lord praised him !

EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL THE APOSTLE TO THE ROMANS IV, 18-24
Abraham was not justified by works done, as of himself; but by grace, and by faith; and that before he was circumcised. Gentiles, by faith are his children.
Who against hope believed in hope; that he might be made the father of many nations, according to that which was said to him: So shall thy seed be.
And he was not weak in faith; neither did he consider his own body now dead, whereas he was almost an hundred years old, nor the dead womb of Sara.
In the promise also of God he staggered not by distrust; but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God:
Most fully knowing, that whatsoever he has promised, he is able also to perform.
And therefore it was reputed to him unto justice.
Now it is not written only for him, that it was reputed to him unto justice,
But also for us, to whom it shall be reputed, if we believe in him, that raised up Jesus Christ, our Lord, from the dead,
Who was delivered up for our sins, and rose again for our justification.

そうすれば,あなたは右(みぎ)へも左(ひだり)へも道を踏み外す(みちを ふみはずす)ことは ないでしょう.」( " “Keep therefore and do the things which the Lord God hath commanded you: you shall not go aside neither to the right hand nor to the left.” " )主たる神(しゅたる かみ)のこの教訓(きょうくん)はモーゼから古代イスラエル人に伝えられた(もーぜから こだい いすらえるじんに つたえられた)もので( "旧約聖書・第二法の書〈申命〉:第5章32節"〈 "Deut.V, 32" 〉)( "This instruction from the Lord God to be passed on by Moses to the Israelites (Deut.V, 32) …" IX, 25-26" 〉)( " … is certainly valid for God’s Chosen People of the New Testament (Rom. IX, 25-26), …" XIII, 7" 〉" )に当(あ)てはめるのは容易(ようい)ではありません( "… but it is not so easy to apply in our own time when the Shepherd of the New Testament is struck, and we sheep are scattered (Zech.XIII, 7) " )(訳注後記3). " ) それとも,彼の倒れ方(かれの たおれ かた)はあまりにもひどいので,もう教皇たりえないのでしょうか?( "Or is he so seriously struck that he cannot be Pope ? " ) いずれにしても,羊たちは散り散りで,ロシアが(聖母の)汚れなき御心(けがれなき みこころ)に奉献(ほうけん)されるまで,そのままの状態が続く(じょうたいが つづく)でしょう( "In any case the sheep are scattered and will remain so, until Russia is consecrated to the Immaculate Heart."
私にはそのように見えます( "Meanwhile, as it seems to me, a letter published in the latest issue of the Angelus, official magazine of the Society of St Pius X in the USA, goes astray to the left." ). S. has several reasons for urging the SSPX to put itself “in the hands…of the Pope as soon as possible.” ).だが,彼らの主観的意図(しゅかんてき いと)が教会に与えた(きょうかいに あたえた)客観的損害(きゃっかんてき そんがい),および SSPX が彼らの支配下に入った場合(しはいかに はいった ばあい)に受ける損害(うける そんがい)について思い起こす(おもい おこす)のに,私は潜在的,顕在的(せんざいてき,けんざいてき)な教皇空位論者(きょうこう くうい ろんじゃ)のいずれにもなる必要(ひつよう)などありません( "But I need be no sedevacantist, implicit or explicit, to recall that their subjective intentions no way lessen the objective damage that they have done to the Church, and would do to the SSPX, if it came under their control." ).第2に, SSPX がローマ教皇庁の人々(ひとびと)( "the Rommans" )が完全(かんぜん)に教理を変える(きょうりを かえる)まで彼らの手中(しゅちゅう)に身を委ねる(みを ゆだねる)のを待つ(まつ)というのは非現実的(ひ げんじつ てき)です( "Secondly, for the SSPX to wait until the Romans’ full doctrinal conversion to put itself into their hands, is unrealistic." ).だが,信仰を敵に回す(しんこうを てきに まわす)のに異説(いせつ)( "heresy" )は一つだけで十分(ひとつだけで じゅうぶん)です( "But one heresy is enough to make an enemy of the Faith, …" ). ). SSPX の指導者(しどうしゃ)たちはローマ教皇庁の人々とあまりにも多く接触(おおく せっしょく)しすぎたため彼らにたぶらかされています( "Too much contact with the Romans has already seduced the SSPX’s leaders." ).
第3に, SSPX は出来るだけ早期に(できるだけ そうきに)真の信仰の教理と実践(まことの しんこうの きょうりと じっせん)をローマ教皇庁に押し返(おしかえ)さなければなりません( "Thirdly, the SSPX must give back to Rome as soon as possible the doctrine and practice of the true Faith." ). VII, 6" 〉 )( "But if Rome were still only half modernist, such a giving back would be to throw pearls before swine (Mt.VII, 6)." 第4に, SSPX はあまりにも長(なが)いあいだ,ローマ教皇庁と距離を置いて(きょりを おいて)きたため,カトリック教の序列,服従,権威の感覚(じょれつ・ふくじゅう・けんいの かんかく)をすべて失(うしな)いかねません( "Fourthly, the SSPX has for so long kept its distance from Rome that it risks losing all Catholic sense of hierarchy, obedience and authority." ).だが,真の信仰は包括的な異説(ほうかつ てきな いせつ)に犯(おか)されないよう安全(あんぜん)なところに置(お)いておかなければなりません( "But the true Faith must be kept at a safe distance from all-embracing heresy." ). - Deut. " 〉)( "If the heresy is not my fault, God can look after my Catholic senses, so long as I am faithful to him, for 40 years or more in the desert, just as he looked after the faithful Israelites (Exod. – Deut.)." そして第5に,いわゆる「抵抗」(ていこう)( "the so-called Resistance" )が公会議派(こうかいぎ は)ローマ教皇庁に対する SSPX の真の抵抗(まことの ていこう)を分断(ぶんだん)し弱(よわ)めます( "And fifthly, the so-called “Resistance” is dividing and weakening the SSPX’s true resistance to Conciliar Rome." ). S. has lost sight of just how seductive and deadly for the Faith is the error of modernism." ).
私にはそう見えます( "On the other hand, as it seems to me, a priest now refusing any longer to mention the Pope’s name in the Canon of the Mass is in danger of going astray to the right." ).もし私がモダニズムは信仰に対し(しんこうに たいし)致命的な危険を持つ(ちめいてきな きけんを もつ)と見るなら( "If I see the deadly danger of modernism to the Faith, …" ).だが,私は彼らの中(なか)にカトリック的な要素(かとりっくてきな ようそ)がまったく残って(のこって)いないと本心(ほんしん)から言える(いえる)でしょうか?( "But can I truthfully say that there is nothing at all still Catholic left in them ? " ) たとえば, S 神父が言うように,教皇たちは善良な主観的意図(ぜんりょうな しゅかんてき いと)を最小限(さいしょうげん)は持ち続けて(もちつづけて)いるのではないでしょうか?( "For example, as Fr. S. would say, do they not still have at least good subjective intentions ? " ) 彼らには教会に仕える(きょうかいに つかえる)つもりはまったくないのでしょうか?( "Have they not all at least meant to serve the Church ? " ) そうだとすれば,私は彼らの中に依然として残っているカトリック的なもの(いぜんとして のこっている かとりっく てきな もの)と一体(いったい)となってミサ聖祭を祝う(みさ せいさいを いわう)ことはできないのでしょうか?( "In which case can I not celebrate Mass in union with whatever is still Catholic in them ? " ) 主流派教会(しゅりゅうは きょうかい)は病で死にかけ(やまいで しにかけ)ているかもしれませんが( "The mainstream Church may be sick unto death, …" ),私としては,そこにカトリック的なことはもう何も起きない(なにも おきない)だろうとは言い切れ(いい きれ)ません( "… but I for one could not maintain that there is nothing Catholic whatsoever still happening within it." ).主流派教会はまだ完全に死んで(かんぜんに しんで)いません( "It is not yet completely dead." ).

10月6日パリで行われたリユ神父( "Fr Olivier Rioult" )のインタビュー(エレイソン・コメンツ第333回を参照)から,もう一つ別の問題について引用(いんよう)させていただきます( "Let me quote Fr Olivier Rioult from his October 6 interview in Paris (cf. EC 333) on another question, …" ). すなわち,世界的な組織(せかいてきな そしき)を新(あら)たに作(つく)るのが可能(かのう)と考(かんが)えるか( "… whether he thought it was possible to set up a new worldwide organization, …" ),それとも長年(ながねん)のあいだ教皇空位論者(きょうこう くうい ろんじゃ)たちを結(むす)びつけてきたような一種(いっしゅ)のゆるい自由(じゆう)な組織(そしき)の方が良いと考えるか( "… or would he rather opt for some kind of free association such as has grouped together sedevacantists for a number of years ? " ),を問われています( "Fr Rioult was asked whether he thought it was possible to set up a new worldwide organization, or would he rather opt for some kind of free association such as has grouped together sedevacantists for a number of years ? " ). 今回は彼自身かれ じしん)の言葉をそのまま引用します:-- ( "Here is his answer, this time in his very own words:-- " )
「私は今後(こんご)数か月(すうかげつ)のあいだに,抵抗運動内(ていこう うんどう ない)のほかのカトリック信徒との友情(ゆうじょう)をベースにした幅広い組織(はばひろい そしき)を設立(せつりつ)するかもしれません( "In the months to come I may be setting up a broad kind of association based on friendship with other Catholics in the Resistance, …" ). ).私にとって,教皇空位論は一つの意見(いけん)にしかすぎません ( "… sedevacantism being for me an opinion." ).ただし,いまのところ,そのような組織を立ち上げるには機が熟(き が じゅく)していません( "But the situation is not ripe here and now for such an association." ).いずれにせよ,カトリック教徒なら誰でも私たちの仲間(なかま)です( "In any case whatever is Catholic is ours." ).カトリック教徒として振る舞い(ふるまい),教会内に君臨(くんりん)する近代主義(きんだいしゅぎ)に抵抗(ていこう)する人たちであれば,私たちは誰とでも共(とも)に行動(こうどう)します( "So any Catholics ready to operate as Catholics and to resist the modernism reigning supreme within the Church, we will work with." ).したがって,私の答えは同じ共通(きょうつう)の善(ぜん):すなわちカトリック教会の信仰(しんこう)と礼拝(れいはい),(訳注・全人類に普遍〈ふへん〉の唯一のカトリック教会の)信仰の擁護(ようご)を分かち合う(わかちあう)幅広い(はばひろい)組織(そしき)であればイエス "yes" です ( "Therefore yes, to a broad kind of association sharing the same common good: the Faith and worship of the Catholic Church, the defence of the Faith." ).この共通の善を持つなら私たちの周(まわ)りのあらゆるグループ同士(どうし)のあいだに友情(ゆうじょう)を作り出だせます( "Having this same common good can create friendship amongst all our groups." ).」
「私たちが終末の時(しゅうまつの とき)に近(ちか)づけば近づくほど,より多くのカトリック教徒は原理原則(げんり げんそく)でなく実践的(じっせん てき)に無政府主義者(むせいふ しゅぎしゃ)にならざるをえないだろうと私は考えます( " "I think that the closer we come to the end times, the more Catholics will have to be anarchists, not in principle but in practice." ).私が言いたいのは,カトリック教徒はあらゆる権力者(けんりょくしゃ)に逆(さか)らわざるをえないだろうということです( "By which I mean, they will have to be against all the powers that be, …" ).なぜなら,権力者は自然の秩序に反して行動するため,中和させ,弱らせ,倒さなければならないからです( "… because these will all have been neutralized, undermined or subverted, operating contrary to the natural order." ).だがら,カトリック教徒は教会(きょうかい),国家(こっか)を問(と)わずあらゆる権力者に抵抗(ていこう)せざるをえないでしょう( "Hence, in practice, Catholics will have to stand up to them all, in Church or State... " ).そうしなければ,カトリック教徒はフリーメーソンの影響(えいきょう)( "Masonic influence" )で歪(ゆが)められ,結局は現世の君主(げんせのくんしゅ)(=この世の君〈きみ〉"the Prince of this world" )に仕(つか)えることになるからです( "… because they will all be twisted out of shape, under Masonic influence... serving in any case the Prince of this world." そういうわけで,私はより世界的な組織を作るのは極めて難しいと考えます( "So I think it will be very difficult to create any more worldwide structures." ).フランス人のドミニコ会司祭ロジェ・カルメル神父( "Fr Roger Calmel" )は物事(ものごと)について明確な考え(めいか くな かんがえ)を持った人物(もった じんぶつ)でした( "The French Dominican priest, Fr Roger Calmel, had a clear view of things." ).彼は1970年にすでに,組織内(そしきない)で自然(しぜん)に指導者の地位(しどうしゃの ちい)につく人たちは自らの職務(みずからの しょくむ)がその組織内で輝(かがや)くようにし( "As far back as 1970 he said that the natural leaders in any given place will have to make their ministry shine out in that one place, …" ),他(た)の組織の指導者たちと友情以上(ゆうじょう いじょう)の絆(きずな)で結(むす)びつきあわなければならないと述(の)べています( "… being tied by bonds of no more than friendship to the leaders in any other place." ) .」
).『信仰を守る戦いは,きっちりとした世界的な組織(せかいてきな そしき)に入ることを拒(こば)む小(ちい)さなグループでなされなければならない( " "The fight for the Faith will have to be fought by little groups refusing to enter into any structured or universal organizations." ). " )( "Within these various groups, such as a small school, a humble convent, a prayer group, a gathering of Christian families or the organizing of a pilgrimage, the authority is real and accepted by everybody... " )….必要(ひつよう)なことは,個々(ここ)のカトリック教徒が自らの恩寵(おんちょう)の限界(げんかい)まで到達(とうたつ)し( "each Catholic to reach as far as his grace" ),権威者(けんいしゃ)が自(みずか)ら確実(かくじつ)に率(ひき)いる小さな領域(ちいさな りょういき)に身を置き(みを おき)( "… and authority will carry him in the little sphere which is certainly his to lead" ),自分を強要(きょうよう)するような大きな行政組織(ぎょうせい そしき)を上に持たず(うえに もたず),自らの職務(みずからの しょくむ)を果たす(はたす)ことである( "and which he will take charge of without having over him any grand administrative structures to make him do so" )( "All that is needed is for each Catholic to reach as far as his grace and authority will carry him in the little sphere which is certainly his to lead, and which he will take charge of without having over him any grand administrative structures to make him do so'. " " ).』」

聖ピオ十世会( "the Society of St Pius X" = SSPX" ) が1970年から1990年までルフェーブル大司教( "Archibishop Lefebvre" )のもとで維持(いじ)されてきた状態からざっと過去15年間に起きた状態に転落してしまったのはきわめて恐るべきことです( "The fall of the Society of St Pius X from what it was under Archbishop Lefebvre between 1970 and 1991 to what it has become over the last, say, 15 years, is little short of horrible." ). 理解するということは赦(ゆる)すことであり,私たちはすべて赦すことを求められて今日のような結果になったのでしょう( "In a brief series let us see firstly why the horror is normal in the poor world around us, because to understand is to forgive, and we are all in need of forgiveness; …" ). それは落胆(らくたん)するためではなく,間違いなく次に起こりうるもっと悪いことに備(そな)え私たちの気を引き締(し)めるためです( "… secondly let us face the horror, not in order to be discouraged but on the contrary in order to gird our loins for worse almost certainly to come; …" ). 神の天国では,神はけっして私たちに為(な)すすべが何もないようにされていないはずだからです(ただし,私たちは手元(てもと)にわずかに残っている水をすべて砂漠〈さばく〉に流し込むようなことをしないことが大切です)( "… and thirdly let us see what we can do to gird our loins, because beneath God’s Heaven he cannot have left us with nothing that we can do (but in this connection it is important not to pour into the sand the little water that we have). " ).カトリック教徒の3人の心ある人々が私たちの時代をどのように見抜(みぬ)いたかを振り返り,この恐ろしい状態がなぜ当たり前のことになったかを理解することから始めましょう( "Let us begin with three fine Catholic minds taking the measure of our age, to see why horror is today the norm. " ).
教皇レオ13世( "Pope Leo XIII" )は1884年に発せられたフリーメーソンに関する偉大な回勅(かいちょく)のなかで,その邪悪な原理原則がいかにカトリック教会を無視し( # 13),傷(きず)つけ( # 14),破滅させ( # 15),さらにあらゆる有益な宗教( "all positive religions" )の破滅(はめつ)( # 16)からあらゆる自然宗教( "all natural religion" )の破滅( # 17),神の創造,摂理(せつり),霊魂の不滅(ふめつ)といった偉大な自然の真理の破滅へ導くかに注意を喚起(かんき)されています( # 18)( "In his great Encyclical letter of 1884 on Freemasonry, Pope Leo XIII marks how its evil principles advance from (#13) disregarding to (#14) injuring to (#15) destroying the Catholic Church, and then from (#16) the ruin of all positive religions to (#17) the ruin of all natural religion to (#18) the ruin of great natural truths such as God’s Creation and Providence and the immortality of the soul." 人の心は泥沼(どろぬま)にはまってしまい,歴代の教皇,枢機卿,司教たちの心といえども例外ではありません( "In the 21st century we have, logically, gone further still, namely to the ruin of the very notion of truth. Minds have been turned into mush, even the minds of Popes, Cardinals and Bishops." ).
教皇聖ピオ10世は1907年の近代主義( "Modernism",モダニズム )に関する偉大な回勅(かいちょく)のなかで,近代主義者たちが同じようにあらゆる真理,思想を破滅させたと明言されました( "In his great Encyclical letter of 1907 on Modernism, Pope St Pius X saw clearly the same ruin of all truth and thought by the modernists." ). の中で同教皇は思いつく最も強い表現を用(もち)いて近代主義者たちがカトリック信仰の堕落(だらく)をもたらす手段(しゅだん)とする心の堕落を厳(きび)しく非難(ひなん)しました( "It is beneath the dignity of Popes to shout, but in Pascendi Pius X uses the strongest expressions available to him to castigate the mind-rot by which the modernists rot out the Catholic Faith." ).教皇は多くの言葉を使って近代主義は我慢(がまん)の限界だと糾弾(きゅうだん)しています( "In so many words he says that modernism is the end of the line." ).同教皇の劇的な警告(けいこく)が功を奏し(こうをそうし),カトリック教会は半世紀ほど救われました( "His dramatic warning obtained for the Church a reprieve of half a century, …" ).だが,教会から締め出(しめだ)されたはずの信仰の腐敗(ふはい)は,教皇ヨハネ23世,教皇パウロ6世のもとで教会の公式教理に変えられてしまったのです!( "… but with Vatican II the Faith-rot that he had flung out of the Church was by John XXIII and Paul VI made official doctrine within the Church ! " ) 歴代の教皇が心を失(うしな)ったとしたら,単なる修道院長たちが心を失っても不思議ではありません.( "If Popes lose their minds, how should mere Superiors not do so? " ).
第二バチカン公会議がカトリック教教理にもたらした大惨事(だいさんじ)を見抜(みぬ)いた3人目の心あるカトリック信徒はロマーノ・アメリオ ( "Romano Amerio" ) です( "A third Catholic mind, measuring the havoc wrought upon Catholic doctrine by Vatican II, was that of Romano Amerio, …" ).彼はイタリア人の平信徒ですが,ルフェーブル大司教はかつて彼の現代における諸々の過(あやま)ちについての分析(ぶんせき),Iota Unum (訳注:フルタイトル= "Iota Unum: A Study of Changes in the Catholic Church in the 20th Century by Romano Amerio" )を高く評価されました( "… an Italian layman whose analysis of modern errors, Iota Unum, was highly praised by Archbishop Lefebvre." ). ( "At one point Amerio says (could somebody find me the reference ?) that if things continue on the same path as now, eventually it will become impossible to speak or write any more, all that will remain is to keep silent ! Paul Craig Roberts" )は執筆(しっぴつ)活動をほとんど停止(ていし)してしまいました( "This may seem unimaginable, but only recently a very good commentator in the USA, Dr Paul Craig Roberts, almost stopped writing, …" ).彼の眼には,一般市民のなかに考えることができる,あるいは考えようとするものがいなくなってきたように映(うつ)ったからです( "… because it had seemed to him that there was no longer any public able or willing to think. " ).
正(まさ)に,現在は反キリスト教運動 "Antichrist" のドレス・リハーサルが進行中です( "Truly, in this present dress rehearsal for the Antichrist, …" ). XXIV, 22), we could all of us lose our minds and our faith." ).そうなったとしたら,心を失いつつある教皇や司教に誰が最初の石を投げつける気になるでしょうか?( "Then who may still feel inclined to throw the first stone at a Pope or Bishop today losing his mind ? " )
VII, 1), …" ).これは,誤(あやま)りのない審判を下すのに必要な完全なる状況(じょうきょう)判断ができるのは神御自身だけだからです( "… because God alone has that perfect knowledge of all the circumstances which is necessary if one is to judge without error, …" ).だが,神は同時に私たちに真の牧者(=羊飼い)と傭兵(ようへい)の違い,すなわち羊(ひつじ)と羊の衣(ころも)をまとった狼(おおかみ)との違いを見抜くよう教えられています(マテオ聖福音書:第7章15節)(訳注後記3)( "… at the same time Our Lord commands us to judge-discern between true shepherds and mercenaries, or between sheep and wolves in sheeps’ clothing (Mt. VII, 15)." ). ).そういうわけで次回のエレイソン・コメンツでは現在 SSPX 内部で起きている恐るべき状態について考えてみることにします( "… and that is why we will soon take another look at the horror now taking place within the Society of St Pius X. " ).

And immediately after the tribulation of those days, the sun shall be darkened and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of heaven shall be moved:

And as in the days of Noe, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

And they knew not till the flood came, and took them all away; so also shall the coming of the Son of man be.

Wherefore be you also ready, because at what hour you know not the Son of man will come.

Who, thinkest thou, is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath appointed over his family, to give them meat in season.

And he answering, said to them: Do you see all these things? Amen I say to you there shall not be left here a stone upon a stone that shall not be destroyed.

And you shall hear of wars and rumours of wars. See that ye be not troubled. For these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.
For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; and there shall be pestilences, and famines, and earthquakes in places:

Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall put you to death: and you shall be hated by all nations for my name's sake.

And because iniquity hath abounded, the charity of many shall grow cold.
But he that shall persevere to the end, he shall be saved.

When therefore you shall see the abomination of desolation, which was spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place: he that readeth let him understand.
Then they that are in Judea, let them flee to the mountains:
Alors, que ceux qui sont dans la Judée fuient sur les montagnes ;
And he that is on the housetop, let him not come down to take any thing out of his house:

But pray that your flight be not in the winter, or on the sabbath.
For there shall be then great tribulation, such as hath not been from the beginning of the world until now, neither shall be.
And unless those days had been shortened, no flesh should be saved: but for the sake of the elect those days shall be shortened.
Then if any man shall say to you: Lo here is Christ, or there, do not believe him.

For there shall arise false Christs and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders, insomuch as to deceive (if possible) even the elect.

Behold I have told it to you, beforehand.

Ecce prædixi vobis.

If therefore they shall say to you: Behold he is in the desert, go ye not out: Behold he is in the closets, believe it not.
For as lightning cometh out of the east, and appeareth even into the west: so shall the coming of the Son of man be.
Wheresoever the body shall be, there shall the eagles also be gathered together.
And immediately after the tribulation of those days, the sun shall be darkened and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of heaven shall be moved:
And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all tribes of the earth mourn: and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with much power and majesty.
And he shall send his angels with a trumpet, and a great voice: and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the farthest parts of the heavens to the utmost bounds of them.
And from the fig tree learn a parable: When the branch thereof is now tender, and the leaves come forth, you know that summer is nigh.
So you also, when you shall see all these things, know ye that it is nigh, even at the doors.
Amen I say to you, that this generation shall not pass, till all these things be done.
Heaven and earth shall pass, but my words shall not pass.
But of that day and hour no one knoweth, not the angels of heaven, but the Father alone.
And as in the days of Noe, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, even till that day in which Noe entered into the ark,
And they knew not till the flood came, and took them all away; so also shall the coming of the Son of man be.
Then two shall be in the field: one shall be taken, and one shall be left.
Tunc duo erunt in agro : unus assumetur, et unus relinquetur.
Two women shall be grinding at the mill: one shall be taken, and one shall be left.
Duæ molentes in mola : una assumetur, et una relinquetur.
Watch ye therefore, because ye know not what hour your Lord will come.
Vigilate ergo, quia nescitis qua hora Dominus vester venturus sit.
But know this ye, that if the goodman of the house knew at what hour the thief would come, he would certainly watch, and would not suffer his house to be broken open.
Wherefore be you also ready, because at what hour you know not the Son of man will come.
Who, thinkest thou, is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath appointed over his family, to give them meat in season.
Blessed is that servant, whom when his lord shall come he shall find so doing.
Amen I say to you, he shall place him over all his goods.
Amen dico vobis, quoniam super omnia bona sua constituet eum.
But if that evil servant shall say in his heart: My lord is long a coming:
Mais si ce mauvais serviteur dit en son coeur : Mon maître tarde à venir ;
Si autem dixerit malus servus ille in corde suo : Moram fecit dominus meus venire :
And shall begin to strike his fellow servants, and shall eat and drink with drunkards:
The lord of that servant shall come in a day that he hopeth not, and at an hour that he knoweth not:
Le maître de ce serviteur viendra le jour où il ne s'y attend pas, et à l'heure qu'il ignore ;
And shall separate him, and appoint his portion with the hypocrites. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

もしジュゼッペ・サルト( "Giuseppe Sarto" )が1914年に教皇ピオ10世として死を迎える代わりに,たとえば1974年に枢機卿(すうききょう)として生涯(しょうがい)を終えたとしたら,彼ははたして教皇パウロ6世の(訳注・カトリック)教会破壊(はかい)に異を唱えていただろうか,と声を強めて問いかけたのです( "In a sermon for the Feast of St Pius X I found myself uttering « almost a heresy »: I wondered aloud whether Giuseppe Sarto would have disobeyed Paul VI’s destruction of the Church, if, instead of dying as Pope Pius X in 1914, he had died as a Cardinal in, say, 1974." ). なぜなら,どうして聖ピオ十世会が天から授かった守護聖人(訳注:「サルト」すなわち「教皇聖ピオ十世」を意味する)の良識が誤りを犯すことがあり得ましょうか?(そんなことはあり得ないはずだからです.)( "Within the Society of St Pius X that must sound like a heresy because how can the wisdom of the heavenly patron of the SSPX be in any way flawed ? " ).でも,これは無意味な疑問だとは思いません( "Yet the question is not idle." ).
その中の一握(ひとにぎ)りの方たちでもいいから第二バチカン公会議の革命に対し公然と抵抗を示すよう説得できたらと期待したのです( "In the 1970’s Archbishop Lefebvre made personal visits to a number of the Church’s best cardinals and bishops in the hope of persuading a mere handful of them to offer public resistance to the Vatican II revolution." ).大司教は生前,わずか6名の司教でもまとまって行動すれば,公会議による教会破壊を大いに妨(さまた)げることができただろうと言っておられました( "He used to say that just half a dozen bishops resisting together could have seriously obstructed the Conciliar devastation of the Church." ).悲しいかな,教皇ピオ12世がジェノバのシリ枢機卿(Cardinal Siri of Genoa)を自(みずか)らの後継者に選んだにもかかわらず,教会権威者にたいする公式な反対の動きは起きませんでした( "Alas, not even Pius XII’s choice of successor, Cardinal Siri of Genoa, would make a public move against the Church Establishment." ).最終的には,ディ・カストロ・マイエル司教( "Bishop de Castro Mayer" )が進み出て異を唱えましたが,それはようやく1980年代になってからで,すでに公会議の革命は教会上層部に深く定着していました( "Finally Bishop de Castro Mayer stepped forward, but only in the 1980’s, by when the Conciliar Revolution was well ensconced at the top of the Church." ).
" )? それら当時の最良の聖職者たちの中でも,ルフェーブル大司教に分かっていたこと,たとえば新しい典礼によるミサ聖祭 ( "the Novus Ordo Mass" )を確立した「法」( the "law" )は単に共通の利益のために出された布告( "an ordinance" )の性格を持つにすぎないので,法とはまったくかけ離れたものであることを理解した方々がほとんどいなかったのはなぜでしょう( "How could so few of the best churchmen at that time not have seen what the Archbishop was seeing, for instance that the “law” establishing the Novus Ordo Mass was no law at all, because it belongs to the very nature of law to be an ordinance of reason for the common good ? " ) ?カトリック教会の存続そのものが第二バチカン公会議と新しいミサ聖祭によって脅(おびや)かされていたときに,大司教はそのような常識の根本原則が権力重視のあまり窒息(ちっそく)させられてはならないと周知徹底しようとしましたが,彼がほとんど孤立無援だったのはなぜでしょう( "How could he have been so relatively alone in not letting such a basic principle of common sense be smothered by respect for authority, when the Church’s very survival was being placed in peril by Vatican II and the New Mass ? " )? 権力者が現実と真実をめぐる争いで圧倒的な優位に立ったのはどうしてでしょうか( "How can authority have so gained the upper hand on reality and truth ? " )?
この疑問に対する私の答えは,これまで7世紀にもおよぶ期間にキリスト教が背教(はいきょう)に落ち込んできたからだということです( "My own answer is that for seven centuries Christendom has been sliding into apostasy." ).反改革運動( "the Counter-Reformation" )のような尊(とうと)い中断期間を除けば,700年もの間,カトリック教の現実は自由主義( "liberalism" )という癌(ガン,=悪性腫瘍)のような空想によって徐々に蝕(むしば)まれてきました( "For 700 years, with noble interruptions like the Counter-Reformation, the reality of Catholicism has been slowly eaten away by the cancerous fantasy of liberalism,…" ).この自由主義とは自然の恩寵からの解放,知性の客観的真実からの解放,意思の客観的善悪からの解放を通した人間の神からの解放です( "…which is the freeing of man from God by the freeing of nature from grace, of mind from objective truth and of will from objective right and wrong." ).最も長く見て650年もの間,カトリック教聖職者たちは現実を固持し擁護(ようご)してきましたが,結局ついにあでやかな近代の面白おかしい空想が彼らの骨の中に入り込み,とうとう現実が彼らの知性,意思から離れていきました( "For the longest time, 650 years, the Catholic churchmen clung to and defended reality, but finally enough of the engrossing fantasy of glamorous modernity worked its way into their bones for reality to lose its grip on their minds and wills." ).聖トマス・モア( "St Thomas More" )が彼の時代にカトリック教会を裏切った英国の司教たちについて述べたように,恩寵を欠いた公会議派司教たちは人間の空想が神の現実( "the God's reality" )にとって代わり,権力が真実にとって代わるよう仕向けました( "Lacking grace, as St Thomas More said of the English bishops in his time betraying the Catholic Church, the Conciliar bishops let men’s fantasy take over from God’s reality, and authority take over from truth." ).聖職者,一般信徒がともに学ぶべき実用的な教訓が( "practical lessons" )がいくつもあります( "There are practical lessons for clergy and laity alike." ).
神に仕える聖ピオ十世会内部,外部の同僚の皆さん,ジュゼッペ・サルトのように行動する必要があるときにジュゼッペ・シリのように行動することに気をつけ,パッシェンディ( "Pascendi" ),ラメンタビリ( "Lamentabili" ),シヨンに関する書簡( "the Letter on the Sillon" )にある現代の誤(あやま)りをサルトがしたように強く糾弾(きゅうだん)しましょう( "Colleagues inside and outside the SSPX, to serve God, let us beware of reacting like Giuseppe Siri when we need to be reacting like Giuseppe Sarto, with his magnificent denunciations of the modern errors in Pascendi, Lamentabili and the Letter on the Sillon." ).教会の全歴史のなかでの最大の危機にあって私たちが必要とする恩寵を得るため私たちは大いに祈る必要があります( "And to obtain the grace we need in this most tremendous crisis of all Church history, we need tremendously to pray." ).
一般信者の皆さん,近代社会生活の恐怖を前に「正義への渇望(かつぼう)」( "hunger and thirst after justice" )をお感じになったら,恐怖があなたの現実感覚を保(たも)っている( "the horrors are keeping you real" )ことに喜びを感じてください( "Layfolk, if horrors of modern life make you “hunger and thirst after justice”, rejoice if you can that the horrors are keeping you real,…" ).そして,あなたが渇望し続けるかぎり,やがては満たされる( "have your fill" )ことを疑わないでください(新約聖書・マテオ聖福音書:第5章6節を参照)( "…and do not doubt that if you persevere in your hunger, you will “have your fill” (Mt.V, 6). " ). 同じところで,従順なる者,悲しむ者は(幸いなり)とも言われています( "Blessed are the poor in spirit, the meek, and they that mourn, says Our Lord, in the same place." ).あなたの知性(=知恵・精神)と感情(=心)を空想から守るもっとも確かな方法は聖母マリアのロザリオを一日5回祈ることです.15回ならなおさら良いでしょう( "As for the surest protection against your minds and hearts being taken over by the fantasy, pray five, better fifteen, Mysteries a day of Our Lady’s Holy Rosary."
