“Do both the one,” says Jesus, “and the other.”
Forget not God in trying to help your brother.

The parallels between the state of the Universal Church in the 1950's and the state of the Society of St Pius X in the 2000's keep arising, because it is the same malady that has afflicted both Church and SSPX. In what does that malady consist ? In a desire so to reach out to man slipping further and further away from God, that the true God is distorted beyond all recognition by being brought down to the level of godless modern man. With the Church, the Faith of all time was to be adapted to fit our modern world, giving rise to the Second Vatican Council. With the SSPX, Catholic Tradition of all time was to be made to fit that Council, giving rise to the slide of the SSPX. “The same causes produce the same effects.”

Last year was the 100th anniversary of the great Apparitions of Our Lady in Fatima, Portugal. She warned of terrible disasters that would befall mankind if her warnings were not heeded. The churchmen reacted inadequately, because after several years She had to tell Sister Lucy that even good souls were not paying sufficient attention to Her requests, while bad people were of course going on their sinful way. Thus the first part of Pope Pius XII's reign (1939-1958) was marked by his devotion to Fatima, but in the 1950's he was persuaded to split the devotional aspect of the Apparitions from their political aspect, notably the Consecration of Russia, and to disregard the political aspect while retaining the devotional, a great mistake. Now see exactly the same mistake being made by certain Superiors of the Society in the 2010's.

A colleague in the Society of St Pius X heard last year (2017) sermons on the subject of Fatima (1917) from two of its senior members. Where he expected a thorough treatment of the Apparitions of Fatima, all he heard was words pious, by no means false, but both of the preachers pictured a world in good health ! The greatness, goodness and mercy of Our Lady were spoken of, and of course Her Immaculate Heart as a mighty place of refuge for us Catholics. Nothing wrong so far. But, our colleague goes on –

“There was not a word on the catastrophic situation in which individuals, nations and the Church find themselves today. The First Part of the Secret of Fatima was mentioned, but neither the Second nor the Third Part. Are the nations not in all kinds of trouble ? Is not Mother Church with Pope Francis at its head in unimaginable trouble ? Given this situation, how can anyone dare to pass over in silence the Second and Third Parts, with not even a mention ?

Our Superiors are taking on a huge responsibility. They are lulling our Catholics to sleep, a religious sleep – “We have the true Mass, we have the Faith, we have priories, we are members of the Catholic Church... what more do we need ?” Sermons like this prevent any reaction, there is no engagement in the battles of the Mother of God, no word of warning against today's electronic gadgets. Here is how Catholics become lukewarm.

“When the children of Fatima were obliged to look into the fires of Hell, their prayers, efforts and sacrifices markedly increased. Do we Catholics of the 21st century no longer need such a view of Hell, such a view of the catastrophic condition of current politics and the Catholic Church ? Many of our faithful do not even notice that something important is being kept from them. When they hear sermons of this kind, they are enthusiastic, they praise the preachers, they are happy as can be. Alas, it is all too understandable that men prefer what is light and pleasing to what is harsh and true.”                                     Kyrie eleison

The “Resistance” ? Just a scattering of seeds,
But from such started out the mightiest deeds.

III, 9" )(訳注後記 2・1 )かでなく,むしろ石たちがたとえ今は黙っていても,やがて叫び出すであろうことを話しましょう(聖ルカによる聖福音書:第19章40節 "Lk.XIX, 40" )(訳注後記 2・2 ).
The last day of the year may be a good time to take a survey of the battle for the Catholic Faith in 15 different countries visited in the course of calendar year 2016 by the author of these “Comments”. It is a battle being fought in very difficult conditions, because of course the Catholic Church depends like any organisation on its head, and Pope Francis has been giving all year long the impression of wanting to destroy the Church as it has been for 2,000 years, and to replace it with anything that will please the modern crowds, which means the media, which means the enemies of God. Truly “the Shepherd is struck and the sheep are scattered”, which includes the Society of St Pius X, but let us tell rather how all over the world God is raising up children of Abraham from stones (Mt.III, 9), who if they were to keep quiet, the very stones would cry out (Lk. XIX, 40).

In India, a former Society priest and Society seminarian, now a priest, are maintaining the only priory and parish of the Resistance as such on the whole sub-continent. May God be with them. In Brazil, it does seem that the episcopal consecration of Bishop Thomas Aquinas has strengthened the defence of the Faith around his Monastery. Thanks be to God. Mexico has always been strong in the Faith, and it is now the base of the excellent website in Spanish, Non Possumus. In Switzerland a small group of layfolk is happy in the shadow of Écône to learn some of the things that can no longer be so firmly taught in the Seminary itself, as when Archbishop Lefebvre gave so much to so many of us. In the United States where the Society had succeeded in replanting the Church's anti-liberal doctrine all over the continent, liberalism is regaining lost ground, thanks to the Society's disastrous change of direction since the Archbishop died. However, the US priests have not yet said their last word, and Fr Zendejas, who was one of them, is bravely rebuilding in their midst.

Two more former Society priests, Fr Chazal and Fr Picot, range all over the Far East and down to Australia and New Zealand. In Korea, a Resistance chapel is maintained in the capital, Seoul, by a courageous medical doctor. In Japan Catholics have been decimated by World War II, Vatican II and now the slide of the Society, but there remain a few Resistance contacts, including one veteran Japanese priest. On the other hand in Asia's most Catholic country, the Philippines, Fr Chazal has dozens of Mass centres and a seminary which it will become easier to serve with the recent priestly ordination of Fr John, a native Philippino.

Back in Europe, Ireland has a new Resistance priory near Cork in the South, and Poland has a group of Catholics waking up to the Society's dangerous slide towards Rome, but they have for the moment only one aged Polish priest. Patience. In the Czech Republic there is a parallel group of ardent Catholics, looking towards priestly conversions to Tradition from the mainstream Church. Their faith is strong. In Belgium there is also a strong group in one provincial city, going back to one good priest who many years ago left behind him a legacy of Catholic conviction and piety. In Germany the Resistance is proving slow to take shape because of Germans' instinctive obedience to authority, but there are stirrings. In Italy also the Resistance is slow off the mark, because the conservatism of Catholics made the Conciliar Revolution tame compared with how it raged in some countries, but Pope Francis may change all that !

And last but not least there is France, which is always a leader in the Church, for good or ill (e.g. Archbishop Lefebvre, or Teilhard de Chardin). French priests have always predominated within the Society, and they are now predominating in the Resistance, and hundreds of French laity come to regular conferences on the classic anti-liberal Encyclicals of pre-Conciliar Popes. But France as a country is for the moment disintegrating, because the Catholics have no true Pope to unite them, and the citizens want no Catholic King to rally them to the cause of God. However, let us have patience, because God will raise up France again, and he will lift us all up with it.

The New Year's Church and world in disarray
Do make us ask, what can we do ? Watch, pray.

So we have reached a new year without either the Church having completely collapsed, or the world having crashed into its Third World War, but both disasters have been brought significantly closer. What path are we on ? What chance do we have of avoiding disaster ?

As for the world, Syria in particular is being turned into a powder-keg where the powder is being piled up for a bigger and bigger explosion. America and Russia, each with their allies, are ready to fight for either of two contending visions of the world's future: the banksters presently controlling the USA want a unipolar world where their New World Order will exercise a worldwide hegemony; the Russians on the contrary want a multipolar world where they can retain their national independence and look after their own interests. And who can blame the Russians if they want to prevent the NWO from taking over the world ? So far they have acted with great restraint in the face of vile provocation from the West.

But as ever, man proposes while God disposes. If men will not stop sinning, then at the moment chosen not by them but by him the dogs of war will be let loose. As usual, men will know why they started the war, but God alone knows how it will end. The Russians have some remarkable weapons, so that the West is by no means sure of “winning”, especially if enough prayers go up from all of us to Heaven for the Consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, because then the Russians might obtain for all of us an interruption of the world's march to the abyss. In any case the war will be just as long and as devastating as God needs for his purpose of saving not civilisations (so called) but souls. Will souls learn their lesson ? If not, God may need to allow them to wreak even more havoc upon themselves.

As for the Church, its influence on world events is decisive. Wherever true Catholic priests are administering true Sacraments, they are extinguishing those sins which are the cause of war (James, IV, 1)(*5.1). But what have we seen through 2015 ? The churchmen presently controlling the Church have shown little to no sign of wanting to return to the true doctrine of the New Testament (*5.1) from the false principles of Vatican II, and Pope Francis in particular by his unrestrained application of those principles seems intent upon nothing so much as upon destroying the Catholic Church. Now back in the 1970's when the Council's work of devastation seemed irresistible, God in his mercy gave to his Church an Archbishop who would raise a new generation of Catholic priests to witness to the true Faith and show in real life that it was not out of date, thereby acting as a brake upon the devastation. But Archbishop Lefebvre died in 1991, and his successors at the top of his Society soon began losing his grip on the necessity of resisting the modern world with its sinister Council. Through 2015 we saw only one sign after another of the Society drawing closer and closer to neo-modernist Rome.

We are driven to ask, do these successors still have any understanding of why the Archbishop set up his Society of St Pius X in the first place ? Do they still have a sense of the true Faith ? Do they realize their grave responsibility to witness to that Faith, and not let it be blurred into the world ? Let them think hard in 2016, before it is too late, before the Society finally dooms itself to lose all its savour by joining in the Conciliar apostasy, by no longer acting as a thorn in the side of the neo-modernists and by ceasing to sustain that true Church which alone has the secret of world peace, Our Lord Jesus Christ, “yesterday, today and for ever, neither liberal nor modernist” (quotation of Archbishop Lefebvre).

EPISTOLA CATHOLICA BEATI IACOBI APOSTOLI
CAPUT IV, versus 1
5 An putatis quia inaniter Scriptura dicat: Ad invidiam concupiscit spiritus, qui habitat in vobis?

8 Approchez-vous de Dieu, et il s'approchera de vous. Purifiez vos mains, pécheurs, et purifiez vos cœurs, vous double d'esprit ;

VULGATÆ EDITIONIS/DOUAY-RHEIMS VERSION : THE NEW TESTAMENT
THE CATHOLIC EPISTLE OF ST. JAMES THE APOSTLE
CHAPTER 4, verse 1
1 From whence are wars and contentions among you? Are they not hence, from your concupiscences, which war in your members?
2 You covet, and have not: you kill, and envy, and can not obtain. You contend and war, and you have not, because you ask not.
3 You ask, and receive not; because you ask amiss: that you may consume it on your concupiscences.
4 Adulterers, know you not that the friendship of this world is the enemy of God? Whosoever therefore will be a friend of this world, becometh an enemy of God.
5 Or do you think that the scripture saith in vain: To envy doth the spirit covet which dwelleth in you?
6 But he giveth greater grace. Wherefore he saith: God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.
7 Be subject therefore to God, but resist the devil, and he will fly from you.
8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners: and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned into mourning, and your joy into sorrow.
10 Be humbled in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you.

これは じょうしきに おもえる かも しれませんが)( "The only way out of the problem that sedevacantists can see is to deny that the Conciliar Popes have been Popes at all, which can seem to be common sense, …"

" ).全体として見れば,善と悪の混合体は悪ですが(ぜんたい として みれば,ぜん と あく の こんごう たい は あく ですが)( "Now taken as a whole, a mixture of good and bad is bad, " ),個々に見れば,その混合体の良い部分が悪い分と同じように悪いということではありません(ここに みれば,その こんごう たいの よい ぶぶんが わるい ぶぶんと おなじように わるい という ことでは ありません)( "but that does not mean that taken part by part, the mixture's good parts are as bad as its bad parts. " ).肝臓癌は私を殺すでしょうが,それは私が両肺に癌を持っている事を意味しません(かんぞう がん は わたくしを ころす でしょうが,それは わたくしが りょうはいに がんを もっている ことを いみ しません)( "Cancer in the liver will kill me, but that does not mean that I have cancer in the lungs. " ). " )答えは「ノー」以外 ありません(こたえは「のー」いがいありません).( "The answer can only be, no. " ). 神は残り半分が教会を潰すことはお許しにならないでしょう(かみは のこり はんぶんが きょうかいを つぶす ことは おゆるしに ならない でしょう)( "but which he would never permit to go so far as to kill his Church. " ).

これまで,例えば,パウロ6世は聖職者の欠乏( "the lack of vocations" )(訳注5・1 )を嘆きました(これまで,たとえば,ぱうろ ろくせいは せいしょくしゃの けつぼう〈やくちゅう5・1〉を なげき ました)( "Thus for example Paul VI wept for the lack of vocations." ). ),彼らのリベラリズムと徹底的に戦い,彼らがカトリックの正道に立ち戻るよう祈願しましょう(かれらの りべらりずむと てってい てきに たたかい,かれらが かとりっくの せいどうに たちもどる よう きがん しましょう)( "… but let us for our part fight their liberalism tooth and nail and pray for their return to Catholic sanity, …" ).

( "The Church needs living Popes,
     however bad." )

( "Kill off the Church they won't,
     however mad." )

聖職者の欠乏( "the lack of vocations" )について:

昨年(さくねん)12月13日(じゅうにがつ じゅうさんにち),教皇フランシスコが住む(きょうこう ふらんしすこが すむ)ローマの聖マルタ・ハウス(ろーまの せい まるた はうす)( "St Martha's House" )で教皇と聖ピオ十世会(せい ぴお じゅっせい かい)総長(そうちょう)( "Superior General of the Society of St Pius X" )フェレー( "Bishop Fellay" )が短時間会いました(たんじかん あいました)( "On December 13 of last year, in St Martha's House in Rome where the Pope is currently living, the Pope met briefly with Bishop Fellay, Superior General of the Society of St Pius X." ). D. と記す.)(いたりあじん かいせつしゃの じゃこも・でぼーと という じんぶつ)はこの会見はローマと SSPX との間に合意が達成(あいだに ごういが たっせい)されたことを示す証拠(しめす しょうこ)だと主張(しゅちょう)しています( "The Society officially denies that the meeting had any significance, but an Italian commentator having some familiarity with how Rome operates, one Giacomo Devoto (G.D.), argues that the meeting was proof that a Rome-SSPX agreement has been reached." ).
http://www.unavox.it/ArtDiversi/DIV812_Devoto_Notizia_intrigante.html.
In brief : -- " )

Guido Pozzo" )(Catholic prelate〈カトリック司祭・神学者〈かとりっく しさい・しんがくしゃ〉〉)の招請(しょうへい)で開(ひら)かれたものでした( "On the morning of the 13th Bishop Fellay and his two Assistants at the head of the SSPX met in the Vatican with the heads of the Ecclesia Dei Commission at the invitation of Monsignor Guido Pozzo, restored to the Commission by Pope Francis to deal with the problematic relations between Rome and the SSPX." しかし, G. D. は会見がたとえ非公式だったにせよ,2012年6月(にせん じゅうにねん ろくがつ)に正式に決裂(せいしきに けつれつ)したローマと SSPX の関係修復(かんけい しゅうふく)のための密かな接触(ひそかな せっしょく)が事前に何回か行われ(じぜんに なんかいか おこなわれ)ていなければ実現(じつげん)しなかっただろうと言(い)っています( "An official publication of the SSPX, DICI, claims that this meeting was merely “informal”, but G.D. says that even being informal it cannot have taken place without there having been beforehand a series of discreet contacts to repair the public breach of relations in June of 2012. " ).彼はさらに,この会合は「正式(せいしき)な」会合を開(ひら)くために必要な準備の一環(ひつような じゅんびの いっかん)だったと述(の)べています( "Also, says G.D., such a meeting is the necessary preliminary to any “formal” meeting." ).

Pozzo, Msgr. di Noia and the three heads of the SSPX repaired to St Martha's House where the Pope also happened to be lunching." ).教皇が食事を終え立ち上がった(しょくじを おえ たちあがった)ときフェレー司教が教皇のもとに歩み寄り(あゆみ より),二人は公衆の面前で言葉を交わし(ふたりは こうしゅうの めんぜんで ことばを かわし),フェレー司教は教皇の指輪に接吻(ゆびわに せっぷん)しました(ローマの バチカン・インサイダー 誌〈ばちかん・いんさいだー し〉はフェレー司教が教皇の祝福を受ける〈しゅくふくを うける〉ためひざまずいたと伝〈つた〉えています)( "When the Pope stood up after the meal to leave, Bishop Fellay went over to him, they exchanged a few words in public view and the Bishop kissed the Pope's ring (or knelt down for his blessing, according to Rome's Vatican Insider)." ). DICI はここでも,二人の出会いは偶然(ふたりの であいは ぐうぜん)なもので単に挨拶を交わした(たんに あいさつを かわした)だけだと,その意義を最小限(いぎを さいしょうげん)にとどめようとしています( "DICI again minimised the encounter as nothing more than a chance meeting with a spontaneous exchange of courtesies." ).これとは反対(はんたい)に, G. D. は,それがたとえ「偶然(ぐうぜん)」な出会いだったとしても,教皇が事前に承知(じぜんに しょうち)して許可を与えて(きょかを あたえて)いなかったら実現(じつげん)しなかったと述(の)べています( "On the contrary G.D. reasonably maintains that even such a “chance” encounter cannot have taken place without the Pope's previous knowledge and approval." ).

G.D. はさらに,外交(がいこう)におけるそうした会見は座を和やか(ざを なごやか)にするよう緻密に計算(めんみつに けいさん)されたもので,解釈に幅(かいしゃくに はば)があり,その持つ意味の大小(もつ いみの だいしょう)は各自(かくじ)の意(い)のままだと言(い)っています( "Moreover, says G.D., in the art of diplomacy such a meeting is a finely calculated ice-breaker, of elastic interpretation, designed to mean as much or as little as one wants." ).一方(いっぽう)で,挨拶を交わしただけの出会い(あいさつを かわした だけの であい)は新教会( "Newchurch" )の要人(ようじん)たちが頻繁に出入りする場所(ひんぱんに でいり する ばしょ)で公の目に触れる(おおやけの めに ふれる)ように行われた(おこなわれた)もので( "On the one hand the courteous contact was there for all to see in a public place frequented by important Newchurch officials, …" ),その日の午前中に開かれた SSPX と エックレ-ジア・デイ 委員会代表者の会合で話し合われた内容(はなし あわれた ないよう)を教皇が支持(きょうこうが しじ)したものだと解釈(かいしゃく)できるでしょう( "… and it could be seen as papal support of whatever had gone on at the morning's meeting with the Commission." ).他方(たほう),教皇庁も SSPX も共(とも)に出会い(であい)には挨拶を交わす以上の深い意味(あいさつを かわす いじょうの ふかい いみ)はなかったと尤も(もっとも)らしく主張(しゅちょう)できます( "On the other hand both Rome and the SSPX could plausibly deny that the encounter had any real significance beyond an exchange of courtesies." ).

かくして,新年早々(しんねん そうそう)に噂が広がり始めた(うわさが ひろがり はじめた)とき, SSPX はすでに数か月前(すうかげつ まえ)からローマとSSPXの合意などまったく問題になっていないと言い張って(いいはって)きたわけです( "Thus when rumours began to circulate in the new year, for months the SSPX denied that there was any question of a Rome-SSPX agreement." ). DICI が教皇とフェレィ司教の接触(せっしょく)があったことを認めた(みとめた)のは今年の5月10日(ことしの ごがつ とおか)のことです( "Only on May 10 did DICI admit that there had been any contact at all between the Pope and Bishop Fellay, …" ).しかも,その際(さい) DICI が二人(ふたり)の出会い(であい)をあまりにも過少(かしょう)に扱(あつか)ったため, G. D. は逆(ぎゃく)にそれがローマと SSPX の間に密か(ひそか)に合意が達成されていることを示す確かな証拠(しめす たしかな しょうこ)だと解釈しているのです( "… and then DICI so minimised the event that G.D. takes it as a sure sign that an agreement has been reached in private. " ).

事実(じじつ),教皇フランシスコとフェレー司教にとって,主要な問題(しゅような もんだい)は彼らが共に望む合意(かれらが ともに のぞむ ごうい)をいかに達成(たっせい)するかではなく,双方に存在(そうほうに そんざい)する右派,左派(うは,さは)にいかにして合意を受け入れ(うけいれ)させるかです( "In fact the main problem, for Pope Francis as for Bishop Fellay, is not how to come to an agreement which they both want, but how to get their left and right wings respectively to accept an agreement. " ). かつて信仰擁護で輝いて(しんこう ようごで かがやいて)いた SSPX が恥ずべき新協会(はずべき しん きょうかい)( "Newsociety" )に変(か)わってきているからです( "However, the problem is being solved for them day by day as the Society, once glorious for its defence of the Faith, becomes the inglorious Newsociety. " ).実際(じっさい)のところ,新協会( "the Newsociety" )が新教会(しん きょうかい)( "Newchurch" )にとっていまだに脅威(きょうい)だと受け止め(うけとめ)ている新教会派司教が何人(しんきょうかいは しきょうが なんにん)いるでしょうか?( "For indeed how many Newchurch bishops can still be fearing the Newsociety as a threat to their Newchurch ? です( "And how many SSPX priests are still convinced that any agreement with Rome would be a disaster, especially if they are promised that “they will need to change nothing” ? " ). それはすでに心の中では達成(こころの なかでは たっせい)されているわけですから( "Such an agreement will hardly need to be announced. In minds and hearts it is already here." ).

これは危険(きけん)なことです( "The crazy words and deeds of Pope Francis are presently driving many believing Catholics towards sedevacantism, which is dangerous." ). ),それは独断に変わり(どくだんに かわり),やがて精神的な確信(せいしんてきな かくしん)になってしまうことが多いようです( "… but all too often one observes that the opinion turns into a dogma and then into a mental steel trap. " ). ).第二バチカン公会議(だいに ばちかん こうかいぎ)が起こした(おこした)前代未聞の危機(ぜんだいみもんのきき)が彼らのカトリック精神と心(かとりっく せいしんと こころ)( "their Catholic minds and hearts" )に苦痛を与え(くつうをあたえ)( "… because the unprecedented crisis of Vatican II has caused their Catholic minds and hearts an agony …" ),それ以降(いこう)その苦痛や疑問(ぎもん)をもう一度(いちど)考え直そう(かんがえ なおそう)としなくなるからだと思い(おもい)ます( "… and they have no wish to re-open the agony by re-opening the question. " ). ),そうするうちに,彼らすべてではありませんがその多くが結果的(けっか てき)に傲慢さや敵意(ごうまんさ や てきい)を示すようになります( "… and in so doing many of them – not all -- end up displaying an arrogance and a bitterness …" ).傲慢,敵意は真のカトリック信徒(まことの かとりっく しんと)の看板(かんばん)でも産物(さんぶつ)( "signs or fruits" )でもありません( "… which are no signs or fruits of a true Catholic." ).

これは教皇の無謬性(きょうこうの むびゅうせい)から生じる論点(しょうじる ろんてん)です( "Let us return to one of their most important arguments, which is from Papal infallibility: …" ). Popes are infallible." ),公会議派の教皇はリベラルである( "… and Conciliar Popes are liberal." ),したがって彼らは教皇でない,というものです( "Therefore they are not Popes. " ).

これに対し,教皇が無謬(きょうこうが むびゅう)なのは彼が教会の特別教導権(きょうかいの とくべつ きょうどうけん)の定める4条件(さだめる よん じょうけん)に従って(したがって)(1) 教皇として,(2) 信仰,道徳(しんこう,どうとく)について,(3) 決定的(けっていてき)に信頼(しんらい)がおけるよう,(4) カトリック信徒すべてをまとめる意向(いこう)をもって話す(はなす)ときだけである,と反論する人(はんろんする ひと)がいるでしょう( "To this one may object that a Pope is certainly infallible only when he engages the four conditions of the Church’s Extraordinary Magisterium by teaching 1 as Pope, 2 on Faith or morals, 3 definitively, 4 so as to bind all Catholics." ). すなわち ―― この論法(ろんぽう)の後半(こうはん)が彼らの弱点(かれらの じゃくてん)です―― 彼らのリベラルな公会議の教えは厳粛(げんしゅく)である( "Whereupon sedevacantists and liberals alike reply that it is Church teaching that the Ordinary Universal Magisterium is also infallible, so – and here is the weak point in their argument – whenever the Pope teaches solemnly even outside of his Extraordinary Magisterium, he must also be infallible. Now their liberal Conciliar teaching is solemn." ). ).

だが,教会の通常普遍教導権(きょうかいの つうじょう ふつう きょうどうけん)に属する教え(ぞくする おしえ)の品質証明(ひんしつ しょうめい)となるのは教皇が特別教導権の枠外(とくべつ きょうどうけんの わくがい)で教(おし)えるときの厳粛さ(げんしゅくさ)ではなく( "But the hallmark of teaching which belongs to the Church’s Ordinary Universal Magisterium is not the solemnity with which the Pope teaches outside of the Extraordinary Magisterium, …" ),その教えの内容(おしえの ないよう)が私たちの主(しゅ)(イエズス・キリスト)(いえずす・きりすと),その弟子(でし)たち,そのすべての後継者(こうけい しゃ)たち,すなわち普遍教会(ふへん きょうかい)( “the Universal Chuarch” )の司祭たち(しさいたち)があらゆる時代(じだい),あらゆる場所(ばしょ)で教えて(おしえて)きたことと一致(いっち)するかどうかです( "… but whether what he is teaching corresponds, or not, to what Our Lord, his Apostles and virtually all their successors, the bishops of the Universal Church, have taught in all times and in all places, …" ). ).したがって,カトリック教徒はリベラル派や教皇空位論者になる義務(ぎむ)などありません( "Therefore Catholics today are not in fact bound to become liberals or sedevacantists." ).

しかし,教皇空位論者たちやリベラル派の人たちは教皇の無謬性についての自分たちの勘違い(かんちがい)に固執(こしつ)します( "However, both liberals and sedevacantists cling to their misunderstanding of Papal infallibility …" ).そうする理由(りゆう)には興味(きょうみ)がないわけではありませんが,それはまた別の話(べつの はなし)です( "… for reasons that are not without interest, but that is another story. " ).いずれにせよ,彼らは簡単(かんたん)には引き下がろう(ひきさがろう)としません( "In any case they do not give up easily, …" ).彼らは別の反論(べつの はんろん)を持ち出し(もちだし)話を蒸し返し(はなしを むしかえし)ます( "… so they come back with another objection which deserves to be answered. " ).彼らが共通して言う(きょうつう して いう)のは,伝統が通常普遍教導権の品質証明だと論(ろん)じるのは悪循環(あくじゅんかん)をもたらすということです( "Both of them will say that to argue that Tradition is the hallmark of the Ordinary Magisterium is to set up a vicious circle." ).もし教会の教導権威(きょうかいの きょうどう けんい)( "the Church's teaching authority" ),すなわち教導権が現に行われ(げんに おこなわれ)ているように教会の教理を説く(きょうかいの きょうりを とく)ためにあるというのであれば( "For if the Church’s teaching authority, or Magisterium, exists to tell what is Church doctrine, as it does, …" ),どうして同時(どうじ)に伝統派教理(でんとうは きょうり)が教導権(きょうどうけん)とはなんなのかを説明(せつめい)できるのか?(というのです)( "… then how can the Traditional doctrine at the same time tell what is the Magisterium ? " ). ),双方(そうほう)が同時(どうじ)に他方(たほう)を権威づけ(けんい づけ)あうなどできないというのです( "… but they cannot both at the same time authorise each other." ). ),教皇の特別教導権による教えは無謬(きょうこうの とくべつ きょうどうけんに よる おしえは むびゅう)なのだから( "… and so the Pope is infallible not only in his Extraordinary teaching, …"

教皇フランシスコが昨年3月選出(せんしゅつ)いらい示(しめ)してきた言動(げんどう)はあまりにも非(ひ)カトリック的で常軌(じょうき)を逸(いっ)しているため( "The words and deeds of Pope Francis since his election earlier last year have been so little Catholic and so outrageous, …" ),最近の教皇は実は教皇ではないのではないか(「教皇空位論」 "sedevacantism" )(きょうこう くうい ろん)といった考え方があらためて息を吹き返(いきを ふきかえ)しています( "… that the idea that recent popes have not really been Popes( “sedevacantism” )has been given a new lease of life." ).同教皇が5人の前任者(ぜんにんしゃ)以上に第二バチカン公会議の狂気(きょうき)をあからさまに語(かた)っている点(てん)だけでも注目してください( "Notice that Pope Francis merely expresses more blatantly than his five predecessors the madness of Vatican II." ).6名の公会議派教皇たち(教皇ヨハネ・パウロ1世は例外と見ていいかもしれません)の中で本当にキリストの代理者(だいりしゃ)( "Vicars of Christ" )だったものがはたしていただろうかという疑問(ぎもん)が残(のこ)ります( "The question remains whether any of the six Conciliar Popes (with the possible exception of John-Paul I) can really have been Vicars of Christ." ).

この疑問はさほど重要(じゅうよう)ではありません( "The question is not of prime importance." II, 12) have not changed one iota." ).逆(ぎゃく)に,6名がすべて教皇だったとしても,彼らがその信仰と倫理から外(はず)れたら私は彼らに従(したが)うわけにはいきません( "And if they have been Popes, still I cannot obey them whenever they have departed from that Faith and those morals, …" ).なぜなら,「私たちは人間(にんげん)でなく神に従うべき」(新約聖書・使徒行録:5章29節)(訳注後記2)だからです( "… because “we ought to obey God rather than men” (Acts, V, 29)." ) . ).その理由は,教皇空位論者たちの中に,ローマ(教皇庁)の司教(=教皇)聖座 ( "See of Rome" ) における教皇空位をカトリック教徒が信じるべき教義(きょうぎ)( "a dogma" )にしたいと願っているように見える者たちがいるからです( "… because there are sedevacantists who seem to wish to make the vacant See of Rome into a dogma which Catholics must believe." ).私の見解(けんかい)では,教皇空位はそのようなものではありません( "In my opinion it is no such thing." ). ).

教皇空位論のどの部分をとらえて単なる一表現(たんなる いちひょうげん)( "merely one expression" )とみなすか,問題(もんだい)のカギを握(にぎ)るのは,第二バチカン公会議がイエズス・キリストの教会の歴史(きょうかいの れきし)の中で前例(ぜんれい)のない惨事(さんじ)だったこと( "I think that the key to the problem of which sedevacantism is merely one expression is that Vatican II was a disaster without precedent in all the history of the Church of Jesus Christ, …" ),同時(どうじ)にそれは中世末期(ちゅうせい まっき)にさかのぼるカトリック聖職者たちの長期にわたる堕落(だらく)の理論的帰結(りろんてき きけつ)だったことの2点です( "… while at the same time it was the logical conclusion of a long decadence of the Catholic churchmen reaching back to the late Middle Ages." ).一方(いっぽう)で,カトリック教会の神聖(しんせい)な性格と公会議危機(こうかいぎ きき)を含(ふく)む教会の諸々の危機を抑制(よくせい)する諸原則(しょ げんそく)は変(か)えようがありません( "On the one hand the divine nature of the Catholic Church and the principles governing any of its crises, including the Conciliar crisis, cannot change." ).他方(たほう),そうした諸原則の適用(てきよう)に当(あ)たっては,それが運用(うんよう)される人的環境(じんてき かんきょう)に絶えず変化が起きる(たえず へんかが おきる)ことを考慮(こうりょ)に入(い)れなければなりません( "On the other hand the application of those principles must take into account the ever changing human circumstances within which those principles operate." ).今日(こんにち)の人間の腐敗(にんげんの ふはい)は前例のないほどです( "The degree of human corruption today has no precedent." ).

さて,諸原則のなかに不変(ふへん)のものが二(ふた)つあります( "Now two of the unchanging principles are that …" ).一方で,私たちの主イエズス・キリストが地獄の門(じごくの もん)は教会に打ち勝つ(うちかつ)ことはない(新約聖書・マテオ聖福音書:16章18節)(訳注後記3)と約束(やくそく)されているので,教会は無謬(むびゅう)( "indefectible" )です( "… on the one hand the Church is indefectible because Our Lord promised that the gates of Hell would not prevail against it (Mt.XVI, 18)." ).他方,私たちの主イエズス・キリストは自(みずか)らの再臨(さいりん)(訳注後記4)にあたってこの世に信仰を見出(みいだ)せるだろうかともお尋(たず)ねになられました(新約聖書・ルカ聖福音書18章8節)(訳注後記5)( "On the other hand Our Lord also asked if he would find faith on earth at his Second Coming (Lk. XVIII, 8), …" ). ).なぜなら,教会が2014年にほぼ完全(かんぜん)に背信(はいしん)しつつあると見えるように,世の終わり(=世界の終末〈しゅうまつ〉)(訳注後記6)にはほぼ完ぺきに背信するであろうことをはっきり示唆(しさ)しているからです( "… because it clearly suggests that the Church will almost completely have defected at the end of the world, just as it seems to be almost completely defecting in 2014." ).というのも,私たちはいまの時点で世の終わりの時を生きていないとしても( "For indeed if we are not today living through the end of the world, …" ),私たちは確かに世の終末時のドレスリハーサル( "the dress rehearsal" )(訳注・実際や本番と同じドレス〈衣装〉をつけて行う予行演習〈よこう えんしゅう〉)の最中(さなか)に生きています( "… we are surely living through the dress rehearsal for that end of the world, …" ).ラ ・ サレットの聖母( "Our Lady of Salette" ),尊者(そんじゃ)ホルツハウザー( "the Venerable Holzhauser" ),それにビィユー枢機卿(すうききょう)( "Cardinal Billot" )がことごとく示唆(しさ)しているように( "… as Our Lady of Salette, the Venerable Holzhauser and Cardinal Billot all suggest." ).

したがって,世の終わりと同じように,今日,教会の背信(きょうかいの はいしん)はさらに遠くへ進み得(すすみ え)ます( "Therefore today, as at world’s end, the defection can go very far." ).教会は完全に消滅(かんぜんに しょうめつ)するとか役立(やくだ)たなくなることはないと保証(ほしょう)する全能の神の力(ぜんのうの かみの ちから)を超(こ)えるほど背信が進むことはないでしょうが( "It cannot reach beyond the power of Almighty God to guarantee that his Church will never altogether disappear or fail, …" ),神がお許(ゆる)しになるところまで進み得ます( "… but it can reach as far as God will allow, …" ).言い換(いいか)えれば,神の教会がほぼ完全に背信するのを止(と)めるのに必要(ひつよう)なものはなにもありません( "… in other words nothing need stop his Church from defecting almost completely." ). ( "And just how far is that “almost completely”? " ) それは神のみが知(し)るです( "God alone knows, …" ).時(とき)だけがその問(と)いに答(こた)えられるでしょう( "… and so time alone can tell, …" ).なぜなら,私たちは誰(だれ)も神の御心(かみの みこころ)のなかにいるわけではなく,諸々の事実(もろもろの じじつ)だけが事が起きた後(ことが おきた あと)に神の御心の中身(なかみ)がなんであるかを私たちに明(あ)かすことができるからです( "… because none of us men are in the mind of God, and only the facts can reveal to us after the event the contents of the divine mind." ).ただし,神は確かに聖書の中に御心の一部(みこころの いちぶ)を明(あき)らかにされています( "But God does partly reveal his mind in Scripture." ).

世の終わりについていえば,新約聖書・聖ヨハネの黙示録:13章11-17節(訳注後記7)を解釈(かいしゃく)する人々の多数(たすう)は,キリストの敵(てき)に仕(つか)える羊(ひつじ)に似(に)た第2の野獣(やじゅう)( "the lamb-like Second Beast" )が教会当局者(とうきょくしゃ)であると考(かんがえ)えます( "Now as to the end of the world, many interpreters of Chapter XIII, 11-17 of the Apocalypse think that the lamb-like Second Beast serving the Antichrist is the authorities of the Church, …" ).なぜなら,そのような当局者がキリストの敵と争(あらそ)うとすれば,聖書には敵が勝(か)つとありますが,敵は決(けっ)して勝てないからです( "… because if those authorities resisted the Antichrist he could never prevail, as Scripture says he will." ).では,世の終わりのドレスリハーサルでキリストの代理者たちがキリストの敵のように話(はな)し行動(こうどう)するとしたら,それはきわめて異常(いじょう)なことでしょうか?( "Then is it so extraordinary if in the dress rehearsal for the end of the world the Vicars of Christ talk and behave like enemies of Christ ? " ) このことを必要な背景(はいけい)として,私は来週(らいしゅう)のエレイソン・コメンツで教皇空位論者たちの主要な主張の何点かに答えを提案(ていあん)するつもりです( "Against this necessary background, next week’s “Comments” will propose answers to some of the sedevacantists’ main arguments." ).

カトリック教信仰の本当の意味を心にとどめ続けている信徒たちは,いまペトロ(=教皇)の座についている人物の言動に呆(あき)れ果てています( "Catholics who retain any real sense of their faith are being scandalized by the words and deeds of the man presently seated on the Chair of Peter." ).彼がその座にいるのはカトリック教会にわずかに残されているものを破壊するためではないかと疑(うたが)いたくなるほどです( "One almost wonders if he was put there to destroy what remains of the Catholic Church." ).彼は第二バチカン公会議から生まれた実の子(じつのこ)のように,神から離(はな)れ人間の方に向かって進んでいます( "Like a true child of Vatican II, he is turning away from God towards man." ).それを示す例として,教皇フランシスコが9月24日あるイタリアの新聞の無神論者の編集者とのインタビューで行った11のキーポイントとなる発言(はつげん)の中から最初の9か所(私が選び出したものではありません)をご紹介します( "Here for example are the first nine of eleven key quotes extracted (not by me) from an interview given by Francis on September 24 to the atheist editor of an Italian newspaper." ).

( "3 The Roman Curia is too self-serving. It must go out to the people." )   4 教皇はお世辞(せじ)をいうご機嫌取(きげん と)りに取り囲(とりかこ)まれた王様(おうさま)であることを止(や)めなければならない.( "4 The Pope must no longer be a king surrounded by flattering courtiers." ) 5 あまりにも多くの司祭たちは利己的で,キリスト教にとって障害(しょうがい)となっている.( "5 Too many priests are self-serving, and obstacles to Christianity." )  この一連(いちれん)の発言は,公式教会からどう行動すべきか指図(さしず)されるのを好(この)ましいと感(かん)じたことのない現代(げんだい)の民主的大衆(みんしゅてき たいしゅう)を喜(よろこ)ばせるに違(ちが)いありませんが( "Now quotes like these will obviously please a modern democratic public that has never liked being told by the official Church what to do, …" ),それは果(は)たして教皇フランシスコ就任前(しゅうにん まえ)の1,900年間にわたり霊魂の救済(れいこんの きゅうさい)のため教会機構(きょうかい きこう)を維持し続(いじ しつづ)けてきた無数の歴代教皇 "Popes",歴世(れきせい)の教皇庁 "Curias",代々(世々〈よよ〉)の管理当局 "Administrations",司祭たち "Priests" に対し公明正大(こうめい せいだい)と言えるでしょうか?( "… but are these quotes fair or just towards the countless Popes, Curias, Administrations and Priests that went before Francis for 1900 years to maintain the structure of the Church for the salvation of souls ? " ) 逆(ぎゃく)に言えば,教皇フランシスコは退任後(たいにん ご)も教会機構が機能(きのう)し続け,霊魂が救済され続けるようにできるのでしょうか?( "Will Francis on the contrary leave any structure still standing, any souls saved, behind him ? " )

引用の 1 と 6 は世界に関するものです:( "Quotes 1 and 6 concern the world: " ) 1 私が見守(みまも)るあいだ,教会が政治(せいじ)に口(くち)を挟(はさ)むことはないだろう.( "1 On my watch the Church will stay out of politics." ( "6 The world’s two worst problems today are the unemployment of the young and the loneliness of the old." )   この二つが現実の人的(じんてき)問題であることは確(たし)かですが,これはどうして起(お)きたのでしょうか?( "Now these are two real human problems of today, but why ? " )  教皇フランシスコのような聖職者(せいしょく しゃ)たちがまさしく政治を政治屋たちに任(まか)せきり,若者たちの前にお金(かね)をばらまいたからではないのでしょうか?( "Is it not because churchmen like Francis leave, precisely, politics to the politicians, putting money in front of young people ? " ) 彼のような聖職者たちが家族(かぞく)を結束(けっそく)させ,家族が老人の面倒(めんどう)を見るという教会規範(きはん)の執行(しっこう)を拒(こば)んだからではないのでしょうか?( "And because churchmen like him refuse to enforce those Church laws which, by holding the family together, help it to look after old people ? " )

引用の 7 から 9 までは宗教に関するものです:( "Quotes 7 to 9 concern religion: " ) 9 イエズスは私たちに互(たが)いを愛するという唯一(ただ ひと)つの救済手段(きゅうさい しゅだん)を賜(たまわ)った ( "9 Jesus gave us only one way of salvation, love of one another." ).  しかし,神を愛(あい)さない隣人〈りんじん〉への愛を優先(ゆうせん)させることは隣人への憎(にく)しみに変(か)わります ( "But love of neighbour without love of God coming first turns into hatred of neighbour, …" ). ).  7a  「人々の改宗(かいしゅう)は無意味(むいみ)である ( "7a Converting people makes no sense." ). " )(訳注後記1)  7 b  私たちはすべて共(とも)に交(ま)じり合い,善 (ぜん)( "the Good" ) に向(む)かって互いに進(すす)まなければならない.( "7b "We must all mix together and move one another to the Good." " )  だが,私たちが共に向かう対象(たいしょう)は神でなければなりません( "But we must all move one another towards God." ) 善とは他に何があるのでしょうか?( "What else is the Good ? " ). 教皇フランシスコが神を口にしないとすれば誰が神を信じるでしょうか?( "If Francis will not mention God, who will believe in God ? " )

カトリック教の神など存在しない」 ( "8a “I believe in God, not in a Catholic God, there is no Catholic God.” " ). ). 神が人類(じんるい)すべてにとっての神であることは事実(じじつ)です ( "True, God is the God of all men, …" ). が,神は人類すべてのために一つの宗教(しゅうきょう),唯一(ゆいいつ)の宗教を起(お)こされました ( "… but he instituted for all men one religion, and one religion only, …" ). それがカトリック宗教(=公教〈こうきょう〉) ( "… and that is the Catholic religion. したがって,カトリック教 "Catholicism" の(教える)神が唯一の真の神(ゆいいつの まことの かみ)です ( "Thus the God of Catholicism is the one and only true God." ).(訳注後記2)   8b 「イエズスは彼自身の顕現(けんげん)であり,私の師(し)であり,私の牧者(ぼくしゃ)であるが,しかし御父(おんちち)なる神,アッバが光であり創造主である」( 8b "“Jesus is his incanation, my teacher and my pastor, but God the Father, Abba, is the light and the Creator.” " ). ). 発言の中にある 「しかし」 ( "but" ) は,イエズスが創造主(そうぞうしゅ)でないことを示唆(しさ)するのではないでしょうか?( "Does not that “but” suggest that Jesus is not the Creator ? " ) 教皇フランシスコはイエズスを単(たん)なる人間以上の存在と信じているのでしょうか?( "Does Francis believe that Jesus is anything more than just a man ? " )   8c 「人は誰でも善悪について自分なりの考えを持っており,自分の考えにしたがって善(ぜん)を追(お)い悪(あく)と戦(たたか)う選択(せんたく)をしなければならない」 ( "8c “Everyone has his own idea of good and evil and must choose to follow the good and fight evil as he conceives them.” " ). これは少しも誤解(ごかい)を招(まね)くような発言ではありません ( "This is not misleading at all." ). これは,あらゆる客観的倫理観(きゃっかんてき りんりかん)の否定(ひてい),カトリック教倫理観の全原則(ぜん げんそく)の否定です ( "This is the denial of all objective morality, the denial of all principles of Catholic morality." ). すべての人々に好きなように行動しなさいという誘(いざな)いです ( "This is an invitation to all men to do as they like." ). この言葉があらゆる外見(がいけん)から見てカトリック教の教皇である人物から発(はっ)せられたのは,まったくの狂気(きょうき)としか言いようがありません ( "Coming from the man who is to all appearances the Catholic Pope, it is sheer insanity." ).

教皇フランシスコは自分の言いたいことを現代人に分かってもらうように努(つと)めているのだと言うかもしれません( "Pope Francis may plead that he is trying to get through to modern man, …" ).だが,神を信じない人に分(わ)かってもらうのは,溺(おぼ)れている人を助(たす)けようとしてロープを川岸(かわぎし)に結(むす)びつけずに危険(きけん)な川に飛び込(とびこ)むようなものです( "… but to get through to him without God is just like jumping into a dangerous river to help a drowning man without a rope tied to the bank. " ).共に溺れ死んでしまうだけです( "One will only drown with him. " ).教皇聖下(せいか),あなたは人を助けるどころか,溺死(できし)させようとしています!( "Your Holiness, you are not helping but drowning ! " )
